1000 Constituents Benefit from APC Empowerment Programme in Lagos
The All Progressives Congress (APC) party has put smiles on the faces of party faithfuls during a well organised Mega Empowerment Programme powered by the lawmaker representing Lagos East Senatorial District, Senator ‘Gbenga Ashafa, where over 1000 party members benefited .
The event which took place in Iberekodo Primary school, Ibeju-Lekki, was strictly for party members and loyalists across the 11 wards in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and Lekki Local Council Development Area.
Among the numerous items that were distributed to all those who were selected as beneficiaries, were Deep Freezers, Vulcanizing Machines, Hair Dryers, Barbing kits and Power Generating Sets, Sewing Machines and provision of financial grants to 500 women party members in Ibeju-Lekki LGA and Lekki LCDA.
According to the lawmaker, the empowerment programme was to reduce the level of unemployment in the society, thereby encouraging the promotion of vocational skills among his constituents.
“Before now, we have done a general empowerment programme throughout the 5 Local Governments and 11 LCDAs across the Lagos East Senatorial District. In Epe and Eredo, on the 8th of March 2013, to be precise, over 300 women benefited.
“Also, there has been in place, a weekly empowerment programme since March 2013 where men, women, youths and various associations benefited from our distribution of business tools and equipment.
“This is our own effort to ensure that unemployment is considerably reduced to the barest minimum in our society and this shows that our party – All Progressives Congress (APC) feels the plight of the Nigerian people.
“What we are promoting among our party members today is to discourage our people from seeking white collar jobs that are visibly unavailable, I believe that if every individual can rely on their skills rather than certificates, this would go a long way to reducing the unemployment level in the society. I know a lot of graduates that are now professional photographers, fashion designers who are doing well without using their certificates.” He said
He went further “Our weekly empowerment programme is just one of the numerous initiatives we have implemented since 2011. Till date, I am proud to say that we have successfully executed 76 Constituency Projects across the Senatorial District. Some of these projects include:30 Boreholes, 11Classroom Blocks, 2 Drainage Channels, 4 Ambulance Points; 22 Power Transformers, 3 Streetlights on arterial roads,1 Skill Acquisition Centre and 1 Science Laboratory”.
While advising the beneficiaries on the empowerment tools, the lawmaker said “it would be a thing of joy to see all the beneficiaries doing well with these empowerment tools , within a few months from now, our monitoring team would visit every beneficiary to ascertain how they have utilised the tools and devise a way of assisting them in the event of any challenges”.
Reacting to the lawmaker’s gesture, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Chairman, Hon Kemi Surakat, APC Chieftains and traditional rulers from Ibeju-Lekki area, all concluded that the initiative was a laudable one, stating that it is a thing of joy to witness the party members showcasing their joy that their sacrifices and belief in the party didn’t go in vain. They advised the beneficiaries to make use of the empowerment tools judiciously.
The beneficiaries too could not hide their joy as most of them showered words of praise on the senator for the timely gesture.
One Miss Adebayo Aminat said that she has been running from pillar to post looking for a means to obtain a better refrigerator for her cold drinks business, but this sudden gift of a deep freezer is just like an icing on the cake.
“I am more than glad at the moment, I wasn’t expecting this at all, now I can go to any length to announce that the All Progressives Party is the true party that can bring the dividends of Democracy to the common man on the street, I pray that God Almighty will continue to enrich distinguished Senator Ashafa that has done this for us”.
In his reaction, Mr Hassan Sodiq, who has been hiring his vulcanizing tool to survive on a daily basis could not hide his feelings by showering encomiums on the lawmaker. “It is a good feeling today that I am counted worthy to be one of the beneficiaries of this empowerment programme. May the Lord God be with Senator Ashafa because we gave him our vote back then in 2011 and here we are today reaping the fruits of our labour. I am indeed overwhelmed by this gesture.
