1000s of students protest in South Africa

Pretoria – Thousands of students belonging to the SA Students Congress (Sasco) were gathering outside the Pretoria City Hall on Friday before marching on the higher education department’s offices.

Sasco secretary general Lazola Ndamase said the students were demanding that all tertiary education be free of charge.

The student body was also demanding that all the mergers of universities that have taken place since 1994 be reversed.

“On top of that list is Medunsa and the University of Limpopo,” he said.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Alta Fourie said about 2 000 students had gathered in the square in front of the City Hall.

They were expected to march down Bosman Street to the higher education offices in Schoeman Street.

No incidents had been reported since students assembled, she said.
