Twenty Gambians are ready to undergo Masters’ and PhD Degree programmes in leading Turkish universities after their selection by a three-man delegation from the Turkiye Scholarships Programme, the Turkey Embassy in Gambia has disclosed.

In a press release sent to this paper, the Embassy disclosed that 46 candidates were invited to an interview, in an examination format, at the Turkish Embassy in Banjul. “Six out of this number did not show up. Twenty have been found successful; 14 of which will go for Master’s while the remaining six will pursue PhD programmes in leading Turkish universities,” the release explained.

It noted that the Turkish government annually provides undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and PhD scholarships to foreign students from various countries on the basis of Turkiye Scholarships Programme (TSP).

TSP has been conducted by the Board affiliated with the Prime Minister’s Office and under the supervision of Deputy Prime Minister Emrullah Isler. Some of the scholarships are provided to some countries as a goodwill gesture. In this framework, a three-man delegation from the Turkish scholarship board visited Banjul in order to conduct the first phase, on May 12, of the early selection of candidates who were shortlisted for Master’s and/or PhD programmes.

The Turkish embassy in Banjul is proud to know that the success rate (50%) of Gambian candidates is much higher than any other African country. These scholarships include round-trip air ticket, full accommodation, tuition fee, free 1-year Turkish language course, health insurance, monthly stipend, cost of books etc. The fields of study vary from economics, business administration, political science, international relations, law, medical science, computer science and engineering,” it explained.

The release went on to indicate that the second phase of the Turkish government scholarships will be the interview of undergraduate candidates which will be conducted in mid June, again at the embassy.  “The embassy would like to remind individuals who intend to apply for scholarship for undergraduate programmes to do so online (www.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr) before or on May 19 – which is the deadline for applications.

Twenty (20) Gambian students are expected to be selected for this year’s undergraduate degree scholarships. As the quota for 2014 is 40 students, all categories, the number of Gambian students to benefit from TSP is expected to double by 2015,” it concluded.
