Anambra 2013: Andy Uba gets the Soludo Treatment-as Jonathan, Tukur, PDP rejects him

Written by Obinna Akukwe
The PDP gubernatorial ticket have been given to Tony Nwoye by the consent of President Jonathan, Bamanga Tukur and 2015 presidential strategists and Andy Uba has been rejected and abandoned in the cold and given the same treatment APGA gave Soludo . Two weeks ago, the elation at Chukwuma Soludo’s entrance into All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) was cut short by his suspicious disqualification which has been traced to undue pressure form the presidency towards the three owners of APGA, Governor Peter Obi, Chief Victor Umeh and Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu.
Soludo’s sin was his closeness to former president Olusegun Obasanjo and his earlier criticism of Jonathan’s wobbling economic policy. Jonathan had earlier dealt with Soludo’s governorship ambitions in 2010 and ensured that all PDP rigging machinery to give Soludo any advantage was dismantled on the eve of the election. He also ensured that PDP Governors did not attend any of his campaign and he failed to attend despite the event being shifted thrice to accommodate his presence. In that election Peter Obi of APGA scored 97843 votes; Chris Ngige under ACN got 60240 votes while Chukwuma Soludo of PDP polled 59365 votes.
Soludo had earlier made the mistake of relying on the goodwill of Peter Obi, Victor Umeh and Bianca Ojukwu for a level playing ground for him in APGA not factoring that the trio has unalloyed servitudinal gratefulness to incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan for helping the party win the 2010 governorship election and the trio would rather offend Soludo than godfather Jonathan. In 2011 APGA repaid Jonathan by refusing to present a presidential candidate.
Ifeanyi Uba had become the smartest of the candidates hunted by Aso Villa. He escaped from APGA, fleeing to Labour Party before the presidential hangman’s noose coils round his political neck. Immediately Ifeanyi Uba joined APGA, some groups sponsored from above mobilized some idle party men to drive him out of the erstwhile moribund party. It took the intervention of the Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State and National Chairman Dan Nwanyanwu to save Uba another embarrassment being engineered by unseen forces. Notwithstanding he is still bugged with incessant court cases meant to distract his governorship aspirations.
Andy Uba knows that Jonathan does not like his face despite all attempt he has made in the past to court presidential favoritism especially through the First Lady. His sin is his godson relationship with Obasanjo which is believed could be used against the incumbent president in 2015 if Andy becomes governor. Tony Nwoye, who became PDP chairman using Uba’s influence during the era of Ngige-Uba kidnap saga was picked as the choice of the presidency over Nze Akachukwu Nwankpa and others. According to those privies to discussions in the Villa, Akackukwu’s handling of the Ohaneze Foundation, which he was accused of converting to private business, and the fear that Ohanaeze Ndigbo could use it against him, made the presidency soft-pedal on his candidacy. Senator Ben Obi, another presidential aide is leading that school of thought and Jonathan listens to Obi more than Akachukwu.
Tony Nwoye, a shrewd politician and unassuming personality, capitalized on these suspicions to convince agents of the presidency and the party to back him up for the polls. He was told to ensure that he takes all the other opponents by surprise by winning the primaries, through hook or crook, an act he aptly executed, outsmarting Akachukwu and Ukachukwu in the process. The victory of Nwoye had temporarily put Andy’s ambition in the cooler. Andy brought to four the number of candidates the presidency has penciled for demolition in Anambra State; others include Chris Ngige, Ifeanyi Ubah and Chukwuma Soludo. The only option available to Andy is to hold on to INEC support and the courts,an experiment he has mastered from his past antecedents and if PDP is not careful, the Amechi-Omehia scenario in Rivers State would re-enact. Curiously INEC had stuck to him like bee, insisting that they know nobody else.
It is a regretful political situation in Anambra State, the selection of their leaders is being heavily influenced by outsiders. In APC, Ezeemo had accuses Ngige of using his friendship with Tinubu to seek upper hand in the gubernatorial ticket and his earlier protest led to the cancellation of earlier adoption of Ngige as party flag bearer and he has vowed to scatter any attempt by Ngige to hijack a party he funded to the tune of hundreds of millions of naira. However, Ngige believes that he is the only candidate that can challenge PDP, APGA AND LP in the state and banks on the support of Tinubu and Okorocha to scale the primaries against the party structures erected by Ezeemo. The disqualification of Soludo and other eligible candidates made it possible for Willy Obiano, a former director with Fidelity Bank and Peter Obi’s business partner to emerge as candidate.
With all these undemocratic permutations and external influence, Anambra State would most likely fall into a wrong hand leading to another eight years of misrule and stunted growth and the citizenry will lag behind again in terms of development. The Soludo treatment, packaged as PDP parallel primary, has been meted to Andy Uba, though serially rejected, he needs all the resources, strength, connections and goodwill to scale through his enemies in the presidency and PDP or face the realities of an ugly end to a governorship dream.

Lagos, Nigeria: The 4th world’s worst City

LAGOS—Lagos is the fourth worst city in the world, Economist Intelligence Unit, EIU, an independent forecasting and advisory business within the Economist Group has said.

And its top worst cities, are scattered around Africa and Asia. Lagos, the fourth on the list, shares its 137 position with Port Moresby, in Papua New Guinea on 38.9 per cent.

The report made available yesterday described it as the second-fastest growing city in Africa and the fourth worst city on earth.

“Rapid growth is not always a good thing because Lagos is now a magnet for two perpetual threats to peace: pirates and Islamist warriors.

Boko Haram have a problem with cities like Lagos and also lots of weaponry. Pirates threaten trade and use kidnapping as a method of funding. Islamist terrorist groups such as Boko Haram (“Education is forbidden”) want to create their own version of heaven on earth by destroying cities such as Lagos and imposing strict sharia law. Lagos has enormous potential but as yet little to show for it – hence its poor ranking,” the report said.

EIU in its 2013 annual survey of the world’s 140 major metropolises, said Lagos has a long way to go politically, socially and economically before it joins the emerging market club.

Controversy continues to trail demolition of Onitsha hotel where human heads were found

•Detention of arrested persons illegal— NOPRIN…
On August 1, 2013, an unprecedented crowd gathered in front of Upper Class Hotel, 8 Market road, Onitsha , Anambra State, to witness its demolition, following the discovery of two human heads and ammunitions by operatives of the Anambra State Police Command.

Consequently, proprietor of the hotel, Mr Bonaventure Mokwe, alongside 13 of his staff were reportedly arrested.

Controversy has however begun to trail the demolition action allegedly on the directive of the Anambra State Government and the continued detention of the suspects.

Although the hotel proprietor’s wife, Mrs Nkiru Mokwe, had earlier cried foul over the demolition of her husband’s hotel, even as she had raised alarm that her husband’s life was in danger.

Throwing its weight behind Mrs Mokwe’s cry of injustice, the Network on Police Reform in Nigeria, NOPRIN, comprising 46 civil society organisations spread across the country, with the aim of promoting police accountability and respect for human rights has described the continuous detention of the suspects without trail as unconstitutional.

Gov Obi supervising the demolition...

Gov Obi supervising the demolition…

Taking a swipe on the state government, NOPRIN also accused operatives of the state command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad,SARS for working for the interest of politicians, rather than the Nigeria Police Force. It therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar to re-organise SARS with a view to insulating them from abuse of office.

Asserting that there was more to the demolition of the hotel than the alleged discovery of human heads, NOPRIN’s Programme and Advocacy Coordinator, Mr Okechukwu Nwanguma , while briefing newsmen on the development, stated that : “ the Anambra State Government ‘s policy of extralegal demolition of properties of persons accused of crime in the state is condemnable. The state government’s rationalisation that such clearly illegal and primitive action is in line with its policy to sustain the fight against crime and criminality , is preposterous and unfounded in logic and law.

While violent crime plagues Anambra State as most other states in Nigeria and daily assuming a n alarming proportion, nothing whatsoever can justify any crime fighting policy or measure that is contrary to the fundamental law of the country that violates human rights, subverts due process and observance of the rule of law..

“ Among the hallmarks and cardinal principles of democracy include respect for human rights, principle compliance with the due process and observance of the rule of law . Any law enforcement or crime fighting approach that compromises or falls foul of any of these basic democratic principles, will not only be unlawful and criminal but will be counter productive. Democracy is protected by the rule of law. The absence of it will be anarchy which is a threat to democracy.

“The prevailing situation in Anambra State, whereby the state government demolishes property of any person accused of a crime, without any judicial process or valid order of court amounts to lawlessness. It is a policy that promotes self help. It is susceptible to abuse and creates room for the persecution or witch hunting of political opponents or personal vendetta.

Illegal arrest “Mr. Mokwe and 13 of his workers arrested along with him, including a Doctorate Degree student at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, who works part time in the hotel to pay for his studies have remained in detention at SARS Awkuzu till date without any indication from the police as to what next step they want to take.

“Following complaints received by NOPRIN on August 4, that Mr. Mokwe was detained, chained and being tortured, with fears that he may be extra judicially killed in custody, we called and inquired directly from the OC SARS, CSP Nwafor on the condition of Mr. Mokwe in police custody. He only confirmed to us that Mr. Mokwe was still in their custody and alive. He however, refused to state how soon the police will charge him to court or free him. Since then, we were informed, he had been unchained and his wife and counsel allowed to see him some times of the day.

*The 'hotel ...Before the bulldozer moved in

*The ‘hotel …Before the bulldozer moved in

The police violated Mr. Mokwe’s rights to due process and presumption of innocence by detaining him indefinitely. Mr. Mokwe’s family insists that he was framed up by business rivals and enemies who had earlier threatened to plant incriminating objects and use the police to deal with him. They contend that the demolished hotel was a commercial property that was accessible to anyone who could pay for room rental and could implant human skulls there.

Conflicting report“The Mokwe’s family said that although the Police claimed to have recovered fresh human heads dripping with blood from the hotel, what they actually displayed to the media were two dried skulls.

NOPRIN believes that if the police have credible evidence to prosecute the accused persons, they should not delay to charge and arraign them before a competent court of jurisdiction. His continued detention in SARS cell without trial is illegal, unconstitutional and condemnable. NOPRIN has already petitioned the Inspector-General of Police on this matter.

The Nigerian Constitution guarantees, among others: rights to life, liberty, fair hearing and due process. It prohibits torture, cruel, inhuman and other degrading treatment, and gives victims of human rights violations a right to seek redress in court. The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights {Ratification and Enforcement) Act, which makes the African Charter part of Nigeria’s domestic law, reinforces these human rights guarantees which are essential for effective policing.

Indicts operatives of SARS
“We have received information about an unholy alliance between the Anambra State Government and the authorities at SARS in Awkuzu whose operatives operate as if they are above the law and accountability. The use of SARS to provide security for illegal demolition of people’s property appear to underscore this unholy alliance.

SARS is under police Force Criminal Investigation Department specifically charged to combat armed robbery and other heinous crimes nationwide. But SARS in all parts of Nigeria has gained embarrassing notoriety , tainting the image of the Nigerian Police locally and internationally, and should either be scrapped or comprehensively reformed to conform to modern standards of policing or human rights compliant policing.

“SARS operatives are known for arresting people for all manner of alleged offences, torturing, and executing suspects, and detainees in their custody are secretly ill- treated. They also dabble into civil disputes.

We therefore, call on Anambra State government to discharge its governance responsibilities lawfully and put a stop to all illegal, barbaric policies and actions,” Nwanguma stated.

Nigeria: The Action Plan Against Marine Pastors, Randy Priests and False Prophets

The rising influence of marine spirits among some backslidden pastors and churches in Nigeria had caused a lot of faithful to lose faith in God especially when they discover the lies and deceits about these pastors. Since the series of expose on false prophets which include ‘Nigerian Churches and the Rising Influence of Marine Spirits part 1&2’; ‘My Hero Pastor is a False Prophet parts 1&2’; ‘New Style Prophets and their Visions of Phone Numbers, Bank Details and Ladies Underwear’; ‘Backslidden Pastors and The Patronage of a Port Harcourt Based Occult Woman’ among others, my mail box has been filled with readers responses in hundreds. There have been hundreds of phone conversations and lots of meetings on the subject matter especially with concerned clergymen spanning all denominations. While some commended the write-ups for exposing things they suspected, others sought more clarifications while majority had tales of ordeals in the hands of false prophets and marine pastors. Some ordeals included rape, extortion, initiation into cults, confusion in the families, while some pastors lamented their ordeals when they invited these false prophets to their churches, including immorality with choristers, ushers, hypnotic surrender of life savings and introduction to occult and marine operations.
I decided to bring out just two most decent and least traumatizing responses from readers and the reaction of one of them Ade , who said he has been on his knees asking God to shut the alter of false prophets. Every Christian should join Ade in the prayer and ask God to shut down the evil alters in their respective churches and expose the prophets of Baal. The pastors should educate their members accordingly and help any victim traumatized by their deception.
Dear Obinna,

I duly appreciate your effort and that of Rev. Yinka Yusuf in exposing all these herbalists called prophets. I am in support of this ongoing cleansing in the body of Christ as it will help separate the wheat from the chaff.

There is one confirmed fake chief priest that calls himself prophet who has virtually slept with all the women (married and single) including his ‘pastors’ wives here in Lekki, Oribanwa precisely. His name is Joseph *** of ***Deliverance Ministry. The shrine called church is situated at Oribanwa, the road beside ** filling station opposite *** (before Lakowe Busstop). There are many people that are ready to testify against him anywhere and anytime including myself. This man has broken many homes, destroyed many families, taken people’s property all in the name of false prophecy and I write, he has a steady sex-partner called Mrs. Jemi***.S***

This man needs to be exposed as he has been perpetrating this evil for a long time…. It is shocking and saddening to say the least. It baffles me that majority of these chief priests called prophets are from Nigeria which should be the spiritual headquarters of the gospel. It will be a great victory to the body of Christ if this herbalist I told you about is stopped immediately before he misleads innocent souls, break peaceful homes and sleep with our mothers, sisters and wives all in the name of deliverance.

Yes, I have been on my knees for God to disgrace him and close his shop this year and I will appreciate if this case is taken seriously sir. May God continue to give us much grace to bring these dogs to their knees.

…Ade from Lagos

Hello Mr Obinna

I am grateful to God that gives you the courage to bring this story to light, Please I want you to use your God given talent and courage to help many Nigerian especially women WHO are trooping ,seeking signs and wonders from occult pastors these pastors are many In Onitsha This is exactly what is happening in a church at 3.3 Onitsha called Chapels of ***,the pastor name is Rev. Nwa***he has been molesting all the ladies in his church by taking them to Hotels one by one .I am shocked when I read your write up from online today NIGERIAMASTERWEB ,HE knew how to hacked people phone number which ordinarily I believe he was a demonic pastor whose master is devil himself. But due to poverty these followers have forgotten God himself and believe in ordinary man of their own like, these pastors have made themselves the visible God and thwart, deceive and con them for their hard earning money, in the name of tithe, sowing of seed, and many others, doing signs and wonders that have come from devil to brain wash the follower. I have a family friend whose sister was a victim to this man…. I would like to have updates as you sent your investigative panels, your investigators should target when they have vigil and cancelling & delivery days

…Fred from London

Space will not permit more letters but it is obvious that Nigerian Christendom has a problem and every believer in Christ has a duty to join in dislodging the strange-hold of marine pastors, randy pastors and priests who take carnal advantage of women and young girls and salvage the church from defilers. Elijah challenged and destroyed the prophets of Baal (1 kings 18 vs 16-40), Simon Peter rebuked Simon the Sorcerer, the first false prophet in the Apostolic age ( Acts 8 vs 9-24), while Jesus Christ rebuked the Pharisees and the Saducees and warned the apostles to beware of their teachings ( Matthew 16 vs 1-12. Therefore, every christian has a task of contributing towards eliminating the activities of false prophets. You can do so by contributing 30 minutes of prayers daily for the next one year, asking God to shut down their powers, expose their antics and deliver the elect from their manipulations. This will sanitize the church system, reintroduce the era of Apostolic Grace and Power and salvage a lot of souls from the broad way of hell and save the church from marine pastors, randy priests and false prophets.

Dead Nigerian soldier serving in British Army named

Private Michael Ihemere collapsed and died while on a training exercise in North Yorkshire

DIED: Michael Ihemere

A NIGERIAN soldier serving for the British Army died during a military training exercise has been named by the government.

Private Michael Ihemere, 26, from Umuodo, Nigeria, was a member of the 1st Battalion, the Mercian Regiment, was identified by the Ministry of Defence.

He collapsed on Wednesday morning while taking part in an exercise on army ranges near Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Officers are working with the army to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death, which is not suspicious, so that a file can be prepared on behalf of the coroner.”

It is not the first military death during training this year, with three reservists dying in the Brecon Beacons last month.

The trio fell unconscious as they were undertaking special forces selection in sweltering 30C degree temperatures.

Mother, daughter sentenced for ‘Nigerian internet romance scam’

A Colorado mother and daughter were sentenced on Wednesday for their roles in a “Nigerian internet romance scam.” Karen and Tracy Vasseur were convicted of stealing more than $1 million from 374 victims who thought they were sending money to aid members of the United States military.

“Not only did this mother-daughter duo break the law, they broke hearts worldwide,” said Colorado Attorney General John Suthers in an official statement. “It is fitting that they received stiff sentences for their unconscionable crimes committed in the name of love and the United States military.”

According to the indictment, unknown conspirators in Nigeria would establish online relationships with victims via e-mail or social media by sending them fake military documents and personal photographs. After the relationship was established, the purported military member would request large sums of money, ostensibly for satellite phones that would allow them to speak to the victims or travel funds that would allow them to visit.

Victims would then be instructed to send the money, typically through Western Union or Money Gram, to a “military agent” in Colorado. Tracy or Karen Vasseur would pick up the money and wire it to their Nigerian associates minus their 10 percent cut. In order to hide the amount and frequency of their transactions, the paired opened twenty bank accounts at eleven different banks and received wire transmissions at sixty-eight different locations in nineteen different cities. They forwarded the money to one-hundred twelve Nigerians at ninety-four different Nigerian addresses.

Their fraudulent scheme began to unravel on March 4, 2011, when Western Union noticed what court papers call “an unusual occurrence”:

Western Union records show that, at 4:03 p.m., after she had sent out three wires, Karen Vasseur sent a wire to Nigeria in the amount of $1,8945. The records then show that two minutes later, at 4:05 p.m., she received a wire in the same amount from a different Western Union location in Thornton, Colorado, and the name of the sender was Karen Vasseur. Just two minutes later, Karen Vasseur sent out four more wires from the same location where the previous four wires were sent from.

While the Vasseurs were careful to keep the total sum of the transactions beneath the threshold that would trigger an automatic vetting by Western Union, the company became suspicious when the same person wired money to-and-from herself from two different locations at the same time.

Tracy Vasseur received a 15-year sentence for role in the scheme. Karen received a 12-year sentence.

Libya: ‘Bomb blast kills 2 in Benghazi’

At least two people including a Libyan prosecutor, who was in charge of cases involving ex-regime officials, have been killed in a car bomb explosion in the eastern city of Benghazi, a security source says.

According to the source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the incident took place on Thursday in Al-laythi district when the bomb, planted in the vehicle, exploded and killed Yussef Ali al-Asseifar and his brother while leaving a mosque at noon prayers.

Al-Asseifar was investigating a number of cases relating to officials who served under the former dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Following the deadly attack, a senior Benghazi military official issued a statement saying that “He (Yussef Al-Asseifar) joined the (Libya’s) revolution early on and he was a good man and well respected.”

Benghazi, Libya’s second largest city, has seen a wave of violence in recent months. Benghazi is the cradle of the 2011 uprising which toppled Gaddafi.

Over the past months, eastern Libya has been hit by bombings and assassinations targeting judges, doctors as well as military and police officers.

In August, unidentified gunmen shot and killed Libyan army colonel known as Mustafa al-Aguili in a drive-by shooting in Benghazi.

Moreover, Azzedine Koussos, a presenter for Libya al-Hurra television, came under attack when he was sitting in his parked car near a blood bank in the Sidi Hussein district of the city.

In February 2011, Libyans rose up against Gaddafi’s four-decade rule and deposed him in August 2011. He was slain in his hometown of Sirte on October 20 of the same year.

Rwanda blames Democratic Republic of Congo for shelling

Rwanda says the Democratic Republic of Congo is responsible for shelling its territory amid rising conflict in the region.

A woman was killed and a baby seriously injured after a shell fell in the Rwandan territory on Thursday, with Kigali warning against further escalation of violence between the two countries.

“We have the capacity to determine who fired at us and will not hesitate to defend our territory. Rwanda has a responsibility to protect its population,” said Rwandan Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo.

The minister said that Congolese forces had fired a total of 34 rounds into Rwanda in the last month.

“We have remained restrained for as long as we can but this provocation can no longer be tolerated,” Mushikiwabo added.

The democratic Republic of Congo said Rwanda’s accusation signaled an openness to intervene in its eastern war.

“All (Rwanda) wants to do is find a way to create permanent disorder to allow them to enter and loot the Kivus, as they have done over the last 15 years,” said Congolese Information Minister Lambert Mende.

The United Nations said Rwandan military officers are fueling violence in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo by covertly backing Congo’s M23 rebels.

The M23 rebels and several other armed groups are active in eastern Congo and are fighting for control of the country’s vast mineral resources, such as gold, the main tin ore cassiterite, and coltan (columbite-tantalite), which is used to make many electronic devices, including cell phones.

Since early May 2012, nearly three million people have fled their homes in eastern Congo. About 2.5 million have resettled in Congo, but about 500,000 have crossed into neighboring Rwanda and Uganda.

41 killed, 27 injured in Kenya bus crash: Police

At least 41 people have been killed and 27 others injured in a traffic accident in Kenya in which a bus veered off a road and plunged into a valley near the town of Narok, police say.

Traffic police officer Samuel Kimaru said on Thursday that the bus driver lost control on a dark road near the town, some 140 kilometers (85 miles) west of the capital Nairobi, at 02:00 a.m. local time (2300 GMT on Wednesday).

The bus was en route from Nairobi to Homa Bay on Lake Victoria when it overturned on the Nairobi-Narok highway, Kimaru said, adding, “It is a horrible scene. Bodies are strewn all over.”

Following the crash, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a statement saying, “We are losing too many Kenyans through road accidents and the onus is us as car owners, as commuters, as traffic police and as leaders.”

Due to the lack of safety features like guard rails, reflective lights and crash barriers, deadly road accidents are common in the African country.

In February, a bus travelling from Nairobi to the eastern town of Garissa swerved off the road, killing 41 people and injuring 24 others.

According to the World Health Organization, between 3,000 and 13,000 Kenyans lose their lives in traffic accidents annually, a third of whom are killed as a result of “unsafe forms of public transportation.”

Meanwhile, Kenya’s Red Cross issued a statement saying that two trucks had fallen into a river elsewhere in the country earlier in the day, but no one was killed or injured in the incident.

‘1000s flee to CAR airport from violence’

The United Nations refugee agency has said that thousands of people have fled to the Central African Republic (CAR)’s main international airport to escape violence in the country in recent days.

“Over the past 10 days arbitrary arrests, detention, torture, extortion, armed robberies, physical violence, restriction of movement, lootings and attacks on civilians have displaced thousands of people,” the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a statement on Thursday.

According to the statement, as many as 6,000 people have fled to M’poko airport in the capital Bangui.

The country has been the scene of violent clashes between hostile groups since its independence from France more than five decades ago.

On August 18, Michel Djotodia, the former leader of Seleka rebel coalition, was sworn in as the new president of the Central African Republic.

The new president promised “to preserve the peace, to consolidate national unity (and) to ensure the well-being of the Central African people.”

A recent UN report blamed the Seleka rebels for much of the chaos in the country, saying, “uncontrolled Seleka elements and unidentified armed groups” in the country committed “arbitrary arrests and detention, sexual violence against women and children, torture, rape, targeted killings, recruitment of child soldiers and attacks.”

In July, the International Federation for Human Rights said at least 400 murders by Seleka-affiliated groups had been documented since March.

There are many mineral resources, including gold and diamonds, in the Central African Republic. However, the country is extremely poor and has faced a series of rebellions and coups since it gained independence in 1960.
