2014 World Cup [Day 7]: Spain dumped out, Holland edge Australia in thriller
Defending champions Spain, were this evening eliminated from the 2014 World Cup, after losing 2-0 to Chile.
Vicente Del Bosque’s men opened their defence in the worst possible style – a 5-1 whitewash against Holland and were desperate to stay in the competition.
However, the Spanish side failed to match the Chileans’ pace and determination and goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz ensured this year’s World Cup will have new champions.
In the other group game played earlier, Holland fought back from 2-1 down to defeat Australia 3-2 in a thrilling encounter, with Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay all getting on the scoresheet for Louis van Gaal’s men.
