Mass Grave Discovered in Addis Ababa

By Betre Yacob

Mass Grave Discovered in Addis AbabaA mass grave has been discovered in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, containing at least 6 bodies of young men, who may have been executed in the past few years.

The identities of the bodies are still remained unclear.

The grave was accidentally found in the area called Ferensay-legasion, inside the barracks of the third army battalion, by road construction workers, who was digging the ground with excavator for road construction.

Witnesses said that the excavator first pulled out two bodies wrapped in blankets and again another four bodies each wrapped in blankets of identical colors. According to witnesses, two of the bodies were still in hand-cuffs and one other had his hands tied behind his back.

So far, authorities have said nothing. But, many are pointing their figures at the EPRDF, the ruling party in Ethiopia.

Witnesses say that the blankets did not lose their original colors and labels and that also indicates the executions were not carried out that long ago.

“It is not doubtful they are victims of the current regime”, a journalist witnessed the event said. “Look! The grave was found in the barracks of the army; on the top of that the blankets didn’t get old; even some of the bodies were in a good condition—they were not totally decomposed.” he explained

Reports indicate that the grave area was immediately fenced off by the army, and the bodies were taken by the federal police.

Ethiopia is one of the nations which are under brutal dictatorial regimes. The ruling party, EPRDF, has frequently been accused by human right organization of mass killings. It is known for arresting, torturing, and killing its opponents.

“It is a grim reminders of the Meles Zenawi era”, A political analyst in Addis Ababa told the Horn Times, East African Website.

“How many more mass graves are we going to uncover in the coming years in this city purged by the regime with unparalleled audacity? It would be the biggest flagrant miscarriage of justice if the ICC chief prosecutor Madam Fatou B let the panicking EPRDF warlords off the hook. It is incumbent up on her to send a team of investigators to Addis Ababa without any delay.

“ This blood curdling discovery has exposed the nation’s festering wounds and further complicated the dreadful ethnic fault line created by the ruling party in May 1991. I personally know that then federal police boss; the snarling evil Workeneh Gebeyhu used the third infantry battalion compound as the headquarters of operations in 2005. He quit the post last year and where is he today? The nation is crying for justice.” he explained.

“EPRDF warlords thought they found a safe spot to store remains of the barbarically executed non-combatant, peaceful protesters. Mass grave right under the nose of the international community and the people of Ethiopia. This crime scene is full of the telltale fingerprints of the dead former ruler Meles Zenawi….” he added.

Zimbabwe: A “Window Dressed” Stock Market Rally on the ZSE

Is it unusual for the share price of companies to move up one may ask? Most would answer no, and to most investors, a rising share price is desirable. However, suspicions may arise depending on the timing of those stock price increases.
As the markets awoke to news that the Securities and Exchange Commission of Zimbabwe (SECZ) was conducting investigations of a few stocks after those counters experienced considerable gains in their prices on a single day`s trading. Fidelity (Assurance and Insurance) rose by around 53% to close at US 13.01 cents on the 30th of December 2013. Similarly Zimplow (Industrial and Engineering) saw its stock rise by 33% at close of trading on the same day. Interestingly, for both of the counters, those gains in share price were on the back of relatively low volumes of trades of just 1000 and 96 000 shares respectively.
A study of nearly 10 000 stocks on the New York Stock Exchange found out that on the final trading day of each quarter since 2004, there was a significant increase in the number of counters that saw their price firm sharply, only to plummet substantially during the course of the following trading days thereafter.
Most financial analysts explain this phenomenon, to the fact that fund managers would employ strategies to enhance the appearance of their fund or portfolio performance. This is usually done toward year or quarter end, a time when performance reports and list of fund holdings are usually sent to clients. As a result of this window dressing which can be know in financial jargon either as “marking the close” or “portfolio pumping”, the performance results of funds are made to look pretty albeit deceptively so. This would ensure the portfolio funds to earn more in the way of management fees.
Fund managers typically drive up share prices through aggressively bidding for more shares of stocks they already own and in so doing causing a spike in their prices which will inflate the value of their existing portfolio. On the other hand, they may sell loss making stocks right toward the end of their reporting season to clients
Window dressing mainly is carried out in thinly traded stocks whose share prices will tend to fluctuate considerably. In such cases, a fund that has a substantial holding in a relatively small counter can drive up the price of that counter by purchasing as little as 100 shares of that stock at a premium round about the closing moments of year or quarter end trading. By so doing, the value of the Funds under Management (FUM) will be go up and the money manager will realise higher fees, as well as other potential clients.
Ordinarily, any increase in the price of a stock should have underlying fundamentals. It follows therefore that any sudden spike in share prices that is not substantiated by an underlying factor in the market fundamentals of a company immediately draws suspicion. However, for the several counters on the Zimbabwean Stock Exchange that saw their share prices rise significantly in one day, there is barely any information that relates to their company prospects that could have justified the sharp increase in their prices. When one considers the moderately low volumes traded as well as the timing of those trades t, one cannot but question if it was a typical case of window dressing by fund managers in the local market.
As the SECZ tries to investigate whether the said matter was a case of window dressing or not, it is not immediately conceivable how they can prove this. The mechanics of the stock market are such that there are relationships between multiple traders across multiple securities and it is not easy to match trades to the traders who made them. Furthermore, as trading on the local bourse is still manual; it would be complex to prove window dressing at least without the SECZ having to go through confidential records and getting assistance of the stockbrokers who are involved in trading.
The question therefore arises as to whether automation of the local exchange would help curb instances of window dressing. In more developed financial markets information about companies and their prospect is readily available electronically and this improves transparency and informed decision making. For example, in South Africa, the Johannesburg Stock Exchange has the JSE news service (SENS) which frequently churns out market information on a daily basis. This would help in analysing whether an increase in a stock`s share price is justified by information about the company that would increase investor sentiment toward that company`s future prospects.
Limit up-limit down price circuit breaker mechanisms are a feature of most automated trading systems. These are designed in a way to prevent sudden and volatile share price movements and prevent stock trades from occurring outside pre-specified price bands by pausing trades altogether when there is a marked decline or rise in the share price. As a result order and transparency in the markets is promoted. This seems to make a case for the forthwith automation of the local bourse to increase efficiency and curb incidences of window dressing.
That being said, a share price increase generally affects everyone who holds that stock. Therefore as a result of that rally witnessed on Monday the 31st, investors with holdings in ABC holdings (Banking & Finance), Fidelity and Zimplow enjoyed as the stocks rose 18%, 53% and 33% respectively. It remains to be seen whether the share prices will trail significantly in the coming days after the rally they experienced.

Evacuate Corpses of MASSOB Members Abandoned in Mortuaries Since 2003- Igbo Youths Warns Uwazurike , Petitions Ohanaeze

The fight between the Association of Igbo Youths (AIYO) and Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) had taken a new twist with the Igbo Youths giving ultimatum to Uwazurike to evacuate and bury the corpses of slain MASSOB members abandoned in mortuaries between 2003 and 2013.

In a petition sent to the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and copied to the Secretary General of Ohanaeze and all the Governors and ex-Governors of the South East, the Igbo Youths asked the leader of MASSOB, Chief Ralph Uwazurike to use the millions he collects from MASSOB members monthly and billions of naira he collects from politicians to give the slain MASSOB and AIYO members befitting burial.

An excerpt of the message sent to the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and copied to prominent Igbo leaders reads thus;

“To The PG Ohanaeze Ndigbo
“His Excellency Sir,
“In order to restore peace , sustain nascent unity of Ndi-Igbo, as Chairman of Imeobi Ohanaeze, pls Sir, direct Uwazurike, MASSOB leader to go to mortuaries in Igboland, particularly in Onitsha and collect the corpses of MASSOB members, members of AIYO killed in 2003, 2006, 2012, and 2013 while carrying out MASSOB acts.”

“We, Aiyo, Ndi Otu Jesus Christ Ji Ofo Na Ogu Alu OLu maka Odimma Ndi Igbo, hereby give Uwazurike & MASSOB ultimatum to use the millions that MASSOB members contributes monthly and the billions he receives allegedly from governments and politicians to give these dead members of MASSOB and AIYO Befitting Burial Now.”

“Despite appeals from Okpalaukwu, the leader for Peace, AIYO can no longer keep calm while MASOB abuse Ndigbo and kill us”

The message was sent by the National Co-ordinator of Association of Igbo Youths, Mazi Chukwuemeka James Ugah who claimed to be an ex-MASSOB General and Commander of MASSOB Security.

During the period Ohanaeze leaders met with President Jonathan at Abuja, the leaders of AIYO and MASSOB met with the President General and Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo , Chief Gary Igariwey and Dr Joe Nwaorgu respectively and other top Igbo leaders and they promised to look into the matter. They also participated in the presidential parley with Ohanaeze Chieftains but soon after the presidential visit, hostilities resumed.

It would be recalled that two months ago the Igbo Youths dragged MASSOB leader, Uwazurike to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in a petition where they alleged that the latter ordered the murder of 18 of their members in June 2013 for denouncing the extortionist activities of MASSOB. They alleged that Uwazurike has turned MASSOB into a business outfit which he uses to collect Billions of naira from politicians.

Following the tensions created by the petition, clerics under the aegis of GAAICOM mandated Rev Obinna Akukwe and other ministers to liaise with both MASSOB and AIYO to ensure that Igboland is not turned into a theatre of war at a time when other zones are preparing for 2015. The former Governor of Anambra State Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife and the proprietor of Rojenny Oba, Chief Remy Ezeonwuka also joined the clerics to intervene asking the aggrieved youths not to wash dirty linen in public.

During Ohanaeze controversial visit to President Jonathan, the leaders of MASSOB and AIYO were seen together discussing at the State Houser and those present hoped that the feud will cease. However, AIYO members have insisted that the only remaining condition was for Uwazurike to evacuate the abandoned corpses from the morgue and give them befitting burial.

In the earlier petition sent to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9 Umuahia, on the 1st of November 2013 and signed by their National Coordinator Comrade Chukwuemeka Ugah and Anambra State Coordinator Mr Odinkpo Ananwude respectively, the Igbo Youths alleged among other thing that
1. That they were former members of MASSOB who worked very closely with Chief Raph Uwazurike and therefore knows him very well.
2. That Chief Raph Uwazurike misled them with the falsehood, that within few months or years Biafra will be a sovereign state, where all their sufferings in Nigeria will be a thing of the past.
3. That Chief Raph Uwazurike instead of actualizing Biafra swindled Ndi-Igbo Millions of Naira. In 2007, those of them who found out that MASSOB is a farce formed AIYO and registered same with CAC.
4. That Chief Raph Uwazurike uses MASSOB to dupe politicians and unsuspecting members of the public, and that evidence is legion.
5. That when they confronted Chief Raph Uwaurike following inexplicable sufferings, he dismissed them with the statement that MASSOB is for himself and members of Chief Ralph Uwazurike’s family and that they should go and form their own organization.
6. That many members of MASSOB who died during one MASSOB activity or another particularly 2003 and 2006, are still in mortuaries,-particularly Owerri Rd Mortuary, Onitsha.
7. That Chief Raph Uwazurike boasts that he is above the law in Nigeria and that no person or government can question him for any reason, even if he kills or orders the killing of anybody.
8 That on the 14th of July 2013, members of MASSOB on the orders of Chief Ralph Uwazurike attacked and killed about 18 members of AIYO because they refused to return back to MASSOB.
9. That Chief Raph Uwazurike and his cohorts on several occasions violently infringed on their fundamental human rights (freedom of association) by forcing them violently to become MASSOB members even inflicting injuries on them, while illegally detaining them.

A prominent MASSOB leader at Onitsha who pleaded anonymity told Rev Obinna Akukwe and other clerics that it was the army, police and SSS that killed the MASSOB members under the orders of Governor Peter Obi especially during the 2003 shoot at sight order and therefore the agents of state should take responsibility for their burial. He described Uwazurike as the best thing to happen to Igboland and called on AIYO members to ask for forgiveness and return to the fold for the sake of Igbo unity.

Surgeon General? Mr President; Do The Needful Or Tender Your Resignation Letter Asap

Fejiro Oliver
Constant attention by a good Nurse may just be as important as a major operation by a surgeon
Dag Hammarskjold

President Jonathan is surely a man that loves courting controversy; searching for troubles where there is none and at the end gets his fingers burnt and finally he blames his political opponents, Social Media critics and online Journalists for his woes. The regrettable thing is that haven wooed the entire problem; he gets entangled in a web of quagmire which ropes him and throws him off balance. Such is the type of President many of us will be regretting for standing under the scorching sun to cast our precious votes.
The crisis in the health sector is still boiling and yet our President who doesn’t give a damn has concluded plans to create an irrelevant office called ‘Surgeon General’ for Nigeria and Nigerians. This certainly is no good plan as many will think; certainly not. This is another office meant to siphon public funds by the Presidency and his band of looters. I have spent three good days consulting all over the world on who an SG is and no one has given a good reason why Nigeria should have such bogus position.
Going through the comments in various newspapers that have their presence online; it is evident that Nigerians do not want such a position. More criminal is the clause that it is the exclusive preserve of Medical Doctors. This is where whoever constructed the bill got it wrong. This is where we know that our President must have PhD queried if he does not know that the SG is an all inclusive position for all medical staffs that are clinically inclined. Here we go.
The SG is a position created exclusively for the military in 1798 when the US Congress established the US Marine Hospital Service. Originally, the corps was composed only of physicians. As medicine became complicated with the realization that most of the injured war victims do not always need surgery but Physiotherapy, Nurses attention or only taking of drugs provided by the pharmacists, the position of the SG was made open to any of the officers in the Medical Command (MEDCOM) who must be a lieutenant General. Thus in December 7th 2011, Lt. Gen. Patricia Horoho. RN was sworn in as the first woman and first NURSE to officially be in command of the Army’s largest medical organization. That day proved to the world that the appointment was no longer based on medical first degree but most qualified among all the health workers.
At the ceremony, Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, chief of staff of the Army, said the impact of the Army surgeon general goes well beyond the Army to the “national and international level.”
“This position requires a special officer that can lead change and achieve unity of effort in the dynamic, joint interagency and also in a multinational role working with our allies and partners around the world,” he said.
Horoho previously served simultaneously as the U.S. Army deputy surgeon general and 23rd chief of the U.S. Army Nurse Corps.
She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Science in Nursing as a clinical trauma specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a resident graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, where she earned a second Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy.
Another Nurse who served as the SG was Gale Pollock after the then Army SG, General Kevin kIley resigned due to the controversial Walter Reed Army Medical Centre Scandal in 2007
A policy change in 1996 made it possible for someone other than a physician to serve as the Army surgeon general, according to the Army Medical Command. The policy reads that “the surgeon general may be appointed from officers in any corps of the Army Medical Department and, while so serving, has the grade of lieutenant general.” The President should automatically get this policy change as soon as possible.
Mr President, it is the words of General Raymond that I bring to you today. He never said the position required a special medical doctor or a special surgeon but a “special officer”. To further prove this point, a Pharmacist is the current Deputy Surgeon General by name, Rear Admiral Scott F. Gibberson, and should the current SG resigns or exit under any circumstance; Gibberson, a Pharmacist will take over the hallowed position. The system we wish to copy must be copied completely with the position made open to all medical workers.
The arrogance of a profession who swims in delusion of self importance should not becloud the generality of Nigerians who have seen far than they do. Taking a look at the bill sent to the Senate smacks of selfishness with roles that has already render the position of the Health Minister useless.
“He/She shall articulate scientifically based health policy analysis, and advise the President, National Assembly, and the Minister of Health on the full range of critical Public health, medical and health system issues facing the Nation.
He/She shall elevate the quality of health practice in the professional disciplines through the advancement of appropriate standards and research priorities.
He/She shall provide leadership and management oversight in National emergency preparedness and response i. e coordinate health and medical services delivery during national disasters.
He/She shall fulfill statutory and customary functions on a wide variety of Federal Boards and Government bodies as required by appropriate representation.
He/She shall promote health and healthy life styles by adherence to norms and standards, this he shall do by providing guidelines on health matters that affect the citizenry”

“The Surgeon-General of Nigeria (SGN) shall appoint numbers of persons as Director or heads of various departments provided the appointment shall reflect the Federal Character of Nigeria” they say. Whose money will they waste for the SG to appoint his cronies as SA, PA, SSA, etc? An intern medical doctor recieves N180, thousand per month which a level 14 officer in most Federal civil service don’t get. As a junior resident, his take home pay is N273 thousand which is the salary of some directors in Federal civil service; and as a senior resident officer, his pay packet is N350 thousand monthly and a consultant takes home N800,000 thousand monthly while some gets as much as N1.6 million, which is an annual pay of many senior Federal civil servants, yet someone comes to drum into our ears that it is not true. If these people collects this outrageous sum in a country where we don’t pay tax on the things we spend like our counter parts abroad; how much will the SG collects monthly? N5 million or more monthly, apart from the other loots that will be budgeted to run the office.
What other work does the Minister of health do other than the above listed for the proposed SGF. Whoever thought up this idea ought to be behind bar. To think that the SGF will serve for tenure of six years when the President who appoints him stays for four years is certainly the works of men who wants to use the office to feather their next. Is the SG our problem in the health sector? A million of them cannot stop any Nigeria from going to seek medical treatment abroad. If I wish to go to Germany for treatment; it is my hard earned money and no SG can block the airport to stop me or any Nigerian from entering the next available plane to go to Germany. Why deceive ourselves that the SG can decide who goes abroad for medical treatment?
Can we stop this deception of creating this position that will further ground the health sector and focus on solving the ones on ground? The governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Suntai does not need surgery to come back on his feet today but physiotherapy. Do we then create the office of the Physiotherapy General? Do we need to remind ourselves that Obasanjo closeness to Senator Andy Uba is because he was rehabilitated by the latter who is a doctor of physiotherapy? Did he ask the then President to create a special post for his colleagues? Any attempt by Mr President to create this post will bring anarchy not just to the health sector but Nigeria as a whole. He should get ready to create the office of the tutor general, Reporter General, Engineer general, bricklayer general, Suya Man general, Banker General, Driver general, Pharmacist general, and even corruption general which will be headed by Stella Oduah, Alison Madueke or Goddey Orubebe. It is as serious as that. The President should focus on building of quality hospitals that will make our leaders get treated at home. It is a lie from the pit of abyss to tell Nigerians that medical tourism is due to the non availability of a Surgeon General. For crying out loud; only five countries have the office of Surgeon General and we do not have to follow suit. Enough of this copy cat culture in us, when we have not finished copying how to practice the true democracy. It’s another sub-standard lie for NMA to Nigerians that Nigeria best brains in Medicine and Surgery are abroad. Oh my God, it means we all have been treated by quacks that are left in this country all these years. We are simply finished.
We certainly do not have money to waste on this borrowed post that is coming to duplicate the minister of health. Come to think of it, which of our medical worker in the Armed Forces is up to the rank of a Lieutenant General? If we must copy anything America, we must also copy their prudent way of spending and it has to begin from the budget. Any attempt to gauge the president into creating this monster position without following the Americans whom we are borrowing it from will certainly prove to the world his weakness, and a weak man cannot govern a country like Nigeria. This is worse than the current challenge of the All Progressive Congress (APC), as it will indirectly affects the masses. What are we even saying? The bill has been brought to the Senate and House of Representatives and they in their wisdom have thrown it out. This bill will certainly not see the day without the assent of the lawmakers, and if in whatever form it succeeds; Mr President should please tender his resignation letter should the health sector goes on strike. We do not live in an animal farm despite the President being a graduate on how to take care of animals.
It is still a rumor for now and President Jonathan can still warm his way back by dousing it and reassuring us that it will never come to pass; at least not in his regime and never should it be. Do the needful. Happy New Year pals.
These little things matter…

Investigation: President Jonathan Budgets Millions For Medical Rehabilitation Board To Maintain Roads And Bridges

…Another millions for Non-Existing security documents
Fejiro Oliver
As Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan continues his quest to acquire wealth for the 2015 election, those in the Medical Rehabilitation Board of Nigeria (MRTB) seems to have towed the same pattern. has uncovered various absurdities in the allocation to the medical board. One of such weird allocation is the sum of N2.66 million for the board to maintain Nigeria roads and bridges, jobs which is supposed to be under the supervision of the Ministry of works. The medical board which comprises of mainly clinical staff saddled with the onerous task of treating various disorders in the human body and sometimes using treatment to prevent surgical operation.
A careful look at the budget for health sector reveals that the MRTB has the most outrageous allocation for projects which sources within the board reveals will not be carried out. Another of such meant to go to private pockets is the allocation of N 2.25 million for the printing of security document. When asked what that mean, one of our sources stated that “ask them not me. What are they printing that is security? When have they become the armed forces or any security agents that they now secretly print documents which will gulp such money?”
The board is the only one among all the health boards that will be printing ‘security document’. The board has also budgeted another N558 thousand for legal services when they are not enmeshed in any legal tussle, prompting the reason behind such allocation. A number of vehicles worth N16.5 million has also be earmarked for the operation of the board, while construction of an unnamed building in an unnamed location is set to gulp N50.5 million.
