4th floor jump to escape fire injures women
Two women have been injured after jumping from the fourth floor of a condo building in northeast Edmonton Thursday morning to escape a fire in their suite.
The two are in hospital. “The extent of their injuries isn’t known, but I’m told they are serious,” said Tim Wilson, emergency services spokesman.
The fire at 137th Avenue and 48th Street broke out around 5:15 a.m. Firefighters evacuated people from about 100 units in the building, putting them on city buses to keep warm.
“I was asleep,” said fourth-floor resident Erin Goulet. “The fire alarm went off. It was full of smoke and the firefighters came up to get me.”
Firefighters had the fire under control by 6:30, managing to contain the fire to the one suite, said Deputy Chief John Lamb.
Crews will be on the scene for several hours mopping up, and investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
