62 Million Nigerians Are Mentally Ill
Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, Monday said 62 million, out of 160 million Nigerians, suffer some form of psychiatric condition which require medical attention.
Governor Orji stated this at the opening ceremony of a certificate course organised by the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu.
The Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Mba Agu Mba, disclosed that the World Health Organisation had projected that in 2030, 15 per cent of the global population will be suffering from mental health challenges.
The governor expressed concerns that the current level of human resources and institutional support are not enough to address Nigeria’s mental health needs.
He therefore canvassed greater commitment and revolutionary policies in order to address the problem.
