Bank Account Links Mwango Sata and Sichinga to Chinese Contractor
According to a newly leaked bank account statement, the Chinese road contractor Jiangxi Corp appears to have made direct payments to both President Michael Sata’s son, Mwango Sata, as well as his nephew Christopher Sichina, the son of the Commerce, Trade, and Industry Minister Bob Sichinga.
The bank account statement has been revealed as part of an ongoing investigative report by Zambia Reports, which has recently obtained bank account statements belonging to both President Michael Sata and his son Mwango, where an individual has made hundreds of thousands of dollars in deposits. Analysts interviewed by Zambia Reports believe that the payments represent alleged bribes by the Chinese road contractor China Jiangxi corporation to secure numerous tenders in Muchinga Province and beyond.
The latest bank account to be revealed belongs to a totally unknown company registered as “MERKKN VENTURES LTD.” On April 30, 2013, Merkkn received a deposit from China Jiangxi in the amount 550,000. Then on May 7, 2013, K416,500 was issued from the account of Merkkn to the account of Christopher Sichinga. A similar transaction of incoming funds from China Jiangxi that was then passed on to Sichinga occured on May 31 and June 3 of 2013, and then again in October.
Deposits to the account were also repeatedly made by an individual named as “RAYMOND MANICO.”
Then, on March 10, 2014, the president’s son Mwango Sata also made a mysterious large deposit in the account, tying Merkkn Ventures to the other activities in the Finance Bank accounts held in the names of President Sata and Mwango Sata.
If any sort of investigation were to be implemented, the pressure would rise on Finance Bank Chairman Rajan Mahtani, who is said to have direct knowledge of these bank accounts allegedly involved in illegal conduct.
