Up for it: Alex Song celebrates after scoring for Arsenal just before the half-time break

Barcelona are reportedly close to agreeing a £15million fee with Arsenal for Cameroonian midfielder Alex Song.

Reports claim the Gunners are ready to saction the sale of their midfield enforcer after their valuation for the 24-year-old was met following talks with Barca officials on Wednesday.

News of Song’s imminent exit come less than 24 hours after the North London club confirmed they had agree a deal to sell Robin van Persie to arch rivals Manchester United.

Van Persie is expected to complete his £24million move to Old Trafford on a four-year deal on Friday after he undergoes a medical, and he could now be joined out of the Emirates Stadium exit door by Song.

Should both deals materialise Arsenal fans will have to contend with losing two of their top stars for the second consecutive season after the departures of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas 12 months ago.

Despite insisting he was happy at the club, Song last week admitted it would be a “dream” to join Barca, labelling them the best team in the world. “I am not going to lie if I said there is no interest but I am at Arsenal and I am happy at Arsenal,” he said.

“Barcelona are the best team in the world, and speculation will always continue until the window closes.”

Should Song join Fabregas at the Camp Nou he will become the seventh Arsenal player to make the move in Catalonia during Wenger’s reign following Marc Overmars, Emmanuel Petit, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Alexander Hleb and Thierry Henry.

His exit will also increase the pressure on the oft-frugal Arsene Wenger to spend the proceeds in the transfer market given the important the Cameroonian had on the side last season.

Long-time target Yann M’Vila remains one option with Rennes conceding they would allow their midfield lynchpin to leave this summer provided their £17m valuation is met.

Wenger played down speculation linking the club with the 21-year-old earlier this month, but crucially said that could change if there were any “setbacks”.

“When you look at our squad we have Song, Ramsey, Coquelin, Wilshere, Arteta and Diaby,” he said. “In defensive midfielders and box-to-box players we are not short if they are all coming back. If we have setbacks in pre-season it could be different.”

Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin is another player to be heavily linked with a move to the club after being told he is free to leave the Bernabeu following the imminent arrival of Luka Modric.

However, reports claim the 23-year-old, the Bundesliga Player of the Year in 2011 for Borussia Dortmund, favours a season-long loan with Liverpool, who are also said to be chasing his signature.
