Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez is aready to turn his back on long-time suitors Barcelona after expressing a desire to secure a summer switch to Bayern Munich, according to his agent.

Barca have been heavily linked with the 23-year-old over the past 12 months and have continued to keep tabs on his situation at San Mames.

Martinez, a member of Spain’s victorious Euro 2012 squad, was a standout performer for Bilbao last season playing in an unfamiliar centre-back role as the Basque club reached the Europea League and Copa del Rey finals.

Bayern have also not been shy in expressing their interest in the midfield enforcer, although boss Jupp Heynches had hit out at Bilbao’s £30m valuation.

However, Bayern’s New sporting director Mattias Sammer hinted earlier this month that the Bavarians were prepared to do something “crazy” in the transfer mark, heightening talk of a move for Martinez.

And they will certainly have been give encouragement by claims from the Spain international’s agent, Ersin Akan, that Martinez favours a move to the Allianz Arena. “Javi wants to join Bayern,” Akan told Sport 1. “It’s also a fact that Bayern still want him.”

Sammer though remains adamant lasy season’s beaten Champions League finalists are still some way from agreeing a deal “The move for Javi Martinez is not a must-do situation,” he said. “It is more of a could-happen situation. We will have to see if the transfer happens.”

To complicate matters further reports in Spain claim Bilbao’s enigmatic Argentina boss Marcelo Bielsa has threatened to resign should Bilbao to sell Martinez this summer.

Bilbao have already been rocked by the news that star striker Fernando Llorente wants to quit the club having informed that he has no intention of signing an extension to his contract which expires next summer.
