Barcelona’s sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta has insisted that the club has no desire to part with forward Cristian Tello, and that he is not one of the players who will be allowed to leave in an end-of-summer clear out.

Cristian Tello, who is perhaps best known, albeit unfairly, for squandering several chances in Barcelona’s title showdown with Real Madrid last season, is regarded as one of the brighter lights of the Barcelona academy system. Although he is now in the final year of his deal and a number of clubs are interested in signing him, Zubizarreta appears to shut the door on a move away.

“We have proposed the renewal of Tello,” he said after last night’s 5-1 win over Real Sociedad, in which Tello’s movement and passing impressed. “I think he can make a great impact this season.”

Liverpool had been extremely hopeful of landing Tello, with Brendan Rodgers trying to secure a season-long loan for the 21-year-old as they try to add more dimensions to an attack that continues to concern the new manager.

Barcelona, though, will be seeking to move on other fringe players, Zubizarreta confirmed.

“This week, we’ll look to make room by sending some players away,” he said.

It is thought that Dutchman Ibrahim Afellay and Mexican Jonathan dos Santos head the list of the players who will be invited to find new clubs.sport360.
