Battle for SA's richest province heats up
JOHANNESBURG – The fight for the country’s economic hub is heating up.
The ANC is working to retain its majority in Gauteng, while opposition parties are looking to increase their footprint in the province.
Gauteng has been an ANC stronghold for the past 20 years, with other parties trailing behind.
In 2009 the ruling party recorded a 64 percent majority, followed by the DA’s 21.2 percent.
As the economic hub of the country, Gauteng contributes more than 30 percent to the national GDP, making it the most coveted jewel in the South African electoral crown.
“If you get to govern what is the richest province in South Africa and arguably in Africa. That means you have far bragging rights and the aspect of governance that you are now governing what is the richest province does bolster your party’s image and funders will come onboard hoping you replicate what you have done in Gauteng in other provinces,” said political analyst Mzoxolo Mpolase.
