Calabar varsity student arraigned over lecturer’s murder
A final year student in the Department of M i c r o b i o l o g y, University of Calabar, Mr Effiom Etim Effiong (27), yesterday appeared before a Magistrate Court in Calabar as a suspect over the murder of a lecturer in the same department of the isttitution, Dr Godwin Iwatt. It will be recalled that Iwatt was allegedly shot in his office by an unknown gunman. The lecturer, however, died few days after in the hospital due to complications from the bullet wound. Iwatt was also the Examinations and Records Officer of the department. It was gathered that Effiong was arrested after investigations revealed series of threat messages he sent to the late lecturer with his phone. The Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Nku Jones, who represented the Cross River State Commissioner of Police, tendered an original case file, with charge number MC/626C/2014 to the court, as well as a covering letter to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice for onward transmission to the Department of Public Prosecution. The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Agnes Obi Odu, adjourned the matter to September 29, 2014, directing that the suspect be remanded in prison custody, while the court awaits the opinion and advice of the Attorney General.
