Carlos Tevez key to Man City’s title hopes says Yaya Toure
Yaya Toure says Carlos Tevez can be the key to keeping Manchester City as English football’s top side after his unsavoury antics were forgiven and forgotten.
The Argentine striker impressed in the 3-2 FA Community Shield win over Chelsea on Sunday, scoring a superb goal, to show he was relishing his fresh start at the Etihad after last season’s problems.
A spat with boss Roberto Manc-ini and his subsequent four-month exile has been consigned to the past as the former captain now looks fired up to lead Premier League champions City to more glory.
Yaya said: “He is one of the most important players in the team. We are very happy to have him because he is such a fantastic player. He made a mistake, but the most important thing when you make a mistake is you have to apologise. He apologised to everyone.
He has come back and wants to show he will give everything for the team. For me, the most important thing is his commitment because the boy is unbelievable – and Carlos has always been committed to the club. He has always helped what we have done.
“We have a lot of fantastic players but Carlos is one of the best. You saw [against Chelsea], he was very dangerous. Both him and [Sergio] Aguero are the perfect partnership. They have played for Argentina before, now they play for Manchester City. I am sure they will score a lot of goals for the club.”
With Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko as world-class alternatives, Yaya knows City have a frontline to fear again as they bid to retain their title and succeed in the Champions League – a competition he won with Barcelona in 2009.
“We have a fantastic squad, with a fantastic manager and I am sure we can go far,” he said. “We have started to win trophies – and winning is very important. I hope we can go a long way. It is going to be very exciting. If I didn’t think I was going to win anything with Manchester City I would leave the club.”
