Chombo Defends Harare Council In US$144m Loan Scam
Government has given the Harare City Council the green light to use the luxury vehicles purchased using the $144 million loan acquired from China.
In an unprecedented turn of events, the Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo defended the Harare City Council for buying vehicles with the US$144 million loan that was acquired from China for water and sewer reticulation.
“The cars are service vehicles and they must be used by engineers and other personnel who are part of the project,” said Dr Chombo.
Acting Harare Town Clerk Mrs Josephine Ncube revealed that 8 of the vehicles were parked much to the dismay of Dr Chombo who gave an abrupt order for the vehicles to be used.
“You should have bought more cars actually. Use those cars or else we will allocate them to others,” ordered Minister Chombo.
Harare water director Engineer Christopher Zvobgo said they used 0.09 percent of the $144 million to purchase 21 luxury vehicles and 35 utility vehicles such as trucks, buses, tippers, compactors and an ambulance.
