Former workers of the defunct Nigeria National Shipping Line have vowed to occupy the premises of the Federal Ministry of Transport in Abuja over their unpaid terminal benefits by the government.

The workers led by their chairman, Comrade Sunday Ben and secretary, Jackson Anomorisa said they have made several efforts to ensure the payment of their severance package since 1995 when the Nigeria National Shipping Line was liquidated.

The union denounced the payment of the gratuity paid to its members in 2007 saying members of the union had been greatly short-changed.

Attempts by some workers of the ministry to force their way into the building housing the ministry almost turned the peaceful protest into a violent one as the retirees prevented them from entering the building.

Efforts by senior officials of the ministry to persuade the protesting ex-workers to allow workers gain access into the ministry also proved abortive.

The retired workers said they were determined to take their destiny in their own hands as they also obstructed vehicular movement along the street leading to the ministry.
