One of the co-accused in the Anni Dewani murder case was expected to apply for bail in a Cape Town court on Wednesday, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.

“The courts were approached by the legal representative for Mr [Mziwamadoda] Qwabe and a new date was set up for a bail hearing,” NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila told SABC radio news.

Qwabe (26) was originally scheduled to appear in court on February 25, but that date had been brought forward to Wednesday, said Ntabazalila.

He was expected to appear in the Wineberg Regional Court.

Qwabe was arrested on November 18, two days after his co-accused, Xolile Mngeni (23) was arrested.

On November 20, taxi driver Zola Tonga was arrested and later confessed to his part in the killing of Dewani and accused her husband, Shrien, of plotting the murder in the township of Gugulethu late last year.

Tonga said he introduced Dewani to the man who allegedly deployed Qwabe and Mngeni to shoot dead the Swedish woman on her honeymoon.

The South African government is currently trying to get Shrien extradited from the United Kingdom to face trial in Cape Town.
