Re: Displeasure about AU’s failure to erect HIM Haile Selassie’s Statue

Dear Mr. Erastus ,

Congratulations on the successful completion of the 18th AU Summit, the inauguration of the new Complex and unveiling of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s statue. One of the founding fathers of African Unity and Pan-Africanist, Nkrumah deserves to have a statue in the AU premises. However, we members of the Ethiopian community, both in Ethiopia and abroad would like to bring the attention of members of the African Union that we are dismayed to learn that the statues of the other founding fathers particularly the late Ethiopian Emperor, HIM Haile Selassie, has not been erected. It is a historical fact that Emperor Haile Selassie, Jomo Kenyata of Kenya, Sekou Toure of Guinea, Julius Kambarage Nyerere of Tanzania played an important role as Nkrumah of Ghana in the foundation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU).

We are surprised at the particular selection of one founding father and erecting his statue in particular ignoring and belittling the values and contributions of the other leaders. As you would very well be aware, HIM Haile Selassie, played the most crucial role in the liberation struggle of many African countries, the signing of OAU’s charter and Pan-Africanism winning him the name “African Father”. He has the legal, moral, historical and diplomatic legitimacy to have his statue erected next to Dr Kwame Nkrumah, we believe. Even though, your Commission still fails to erect his statue, we believe that when democratic African governments and AU Commission come to power in Ethiopia and other AU member countries, HIM’s and other founding fathers statues would absolutely be erected. How would you as leaders and members of this generation, feel when the histories and roles of our founding fathers has been tarnished and disparaged? Therefore, we are writing this letter to you expressing our disgruntlement and displeasure about the failure of AU to honour our founding fathers especially HIM Haile Selassie and hope that you will take our complaints into consideration.

Thanking You,
