Ebola: IOC bars West African athletes from some events at Youth Olympic Games
Athletes from Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia and Sierre Leone, have been barred from participating in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), because of the Ebola outbreak.
The events which the athletes will not be allowed to compete in, are mostly combat sports or in the swimming pool, as it is impossible to rule out the risk of potential infection.
“We regret that due to this issue some young athletes may have suffered twice, both from the anguish caused by the outbreak in their home countries and by not being able to compete in the Youth Olympic Games,” the IOC and organisers said.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 1,069 people have died from the worst outbreak of the virus.
