EFF member murdered in Vosloorus: report
JOHANNESBURG – An EFF member has been killed in Vosloorus, on the East Rand, the Sunday Independent reported.
Thapelo Lekana, 28, was shot four times outside the gate of his house at 5am on Friday, according to the newspaper.
Police spokesman Brigadier Neville Malila told Sapa a man had been killed, but he could not say whether he was a member of a political party.
“He was shot by an unknown person. No one has been arrested yet,” he said.
The newspaper quoted the Economic Freedom Fighters Gauteng convener Mgini Tshwaku as saying that Lekana was coming from a meeting when he was attacked. His cellphone was taken. Malila could not confirm this.
On Sunday, Malila told Sapa that Alexandra was quiet following Friday’s protests in the township. Residents reportedly demanded the release of people arrested for public violence on Thursday night.
“Nothing is happening there,” he said on Sunday.
The army was sent in and police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades to the disperse protesters, and arrested dozens of people on public violence charges.
On Wednesday night, Gauteng African National Congress members were apparently held hostage by Inkatha Freedom Party supporters who reportedly saw ballot papers in an ANC car. Police denied there had been a “hostage situation”.
