Emir of Qatar in talks with Algerian president
The emir of Qatar, a supporter of NATO action against Libya’s Kadhafi regime, visited neighbouring Algeria on Wednesday for negotiations with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
The head of state welcomed Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani on his arrival at the airport before they headed for the presidential residence for talks also attended by Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia and Qatari Foreign Minister Ahmed el Mahmoud.
The APS news agency said the visit was one of “business and friendship.”
Qatar, an active partner in the international intervention against the Kadhafi regime, also recognises the rebels’ National Transitional Council and is home to the Free Libya television station which it partly finances.
Algeria meanwhile thinks that the Libyans should resolve the conflict by peaceful negotiation and believes a solution is possible without Kadhafi’s departure.
The emir’s last visit to Algeria took place in December 2010.
The two countries have enjoyed good business relations, with Qatari groups involved in Algeria’s gas and mobile telephone industries. AFP
