Ethiopia: African Peer Review Mechanism Report On Ethiopia Launched

The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Report on Ethiopia was launched at the National Palace on Friday (January, 11th).

The launching ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Hailemariam and Minister Neway Gebreab, economic advisor to the Prime Minister as well as Ambassador Ashraf Rashed, Lead Member of the Panel, and Professor Amos Sawyer, Chairperson of the APR Panel of Eminent Persons and other high level dignitaries. The report was conducted through the active participation of all stakeholders including political parties, civic societies, media and other institutions of governance. Speaking on the occasion, Prime Minister Hailemariam noted that the steady increase in the number of countries acceding to APRM’S voluntary self-assessment demonstrated the success of the Peer Review Mechanism.

He added that Ethiopia highly valued the Report as reference material for designing future plans for the country to improve governance and to address identified deficiencies in the thematic areas studied. The country review mission conducted its study on four thematic issues: Good Governance and Democracy, Economic Governance, Corporate Governance and Socio-economic Development. Ambassador Ashraf Rashed thanked the Ethiopian government for successfully completing the review process and encouraged it to produce an annual report in the future.

He added that the African Peer Review Mechanism, which is an African initiative aimed at ensuring rule of law and governance, had grown tremendously in the ten years since its inception. The number of countries that had voluntarily joined the process had now reached now 31, he said, and four others were now involved in joining the Mechanism.

The next APR Forum meeting on January 26th this year, during the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, will mark the 10th Anniversary of the African Peer Review Mechanism.
