ADDIS ABABA – The Ethiopian Parliament on Tuesday approved the appointment of Aster Mammo as deputy prime minister, becoming the first woman in the country’s history to hold such a lofty position.

Parliament endorsed Mammo’s nomination by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn to head up the civil service and good governance reform portfolios.

Mammo had been serving as senior PR advisor for the Oromia regional state council when she was tapped for the high-level government post.

Aster holds a Bachelor’s degree in language and literature and a Master’s Degree in organizational leadership.
