Fake lawyer remanded in Akure prison

NBANemesis has caught up with a man who has been parading himself as a lawyer in Akure, as member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Akure yesterday got him prosecute.

The 40 year old-man, identified as Olaoluwa Joseph, was arrested on August 11 while appearing as a lawyer before Chief Magistrate Olarenwaju Adesanmi in Akure.

The suspect was said to have dressed in lawyer suit and sat at the bar before he was apprehended after signing lawyers attendance register for the day.

However, a lawyer in the Court, Mr Olomoniyo Oluwabunmi alerted the presiding Magistrate that Joseph who sat at the Bar was not a lawyer.

Policemen at the Area Commander office, Akure were immediately called to investigate the case.

They searched his house and discovered a bail bond being used by the suspect to procure Court bail for accused persons.

Joseph thereafter made confessional statement to the Police as having been pretending to be a lawyer in Akure for sometime now.

He was later arraigned at Chief Magistrate Court, Oke Eda, Akure on two count- charge of unlawful possession of lawyers bail bond and falsely representing himself as a lawyer before Chief Magistrate Court, Ondo road Akure.

The team of Lawyers from Akure NBA led by its Chairman, Lawrence Dare and former secretary of the branch, Charles Titiloye immediately opened their case before the Court.

They called two witnesses, tendered in evidence to include the suit worn by the accused to impersonate lawyers and bail bond recovered from him and his confessional statement to Police that he has been falsely representing himself as a lawyer.

When the accused was called upon to make his defence, he prostrated before the Magistrate Court and pleaded for mercy.

Joseph said he was led to the crime because he was jobless and his wife is currently ill and in the Hospital.

According to him, he just applied for admission to study in the University, pleading for mercy.

Magistrate Kuye said the accused ought not to have wasted the time of Court by not pleading guilty.

He ordered that the accused be remanded at Olokuta Prison, Akure till September 1, when the Court would deliver its final Judgment.
