A seven -year -old girl, Theresa James, was in the early hours of Friday killed by flood occasioned by heavy down pour on the Anguwar Yelwa community, Chikun local government area of Kaduna State.

The flood also bought down a section of the Anguwar Yelwa Sabo Bridge, cutting away some parts of the community from the Kaduna metropolis.

Eyewitnesses told The Nation that the flood, caused by two days heavy downpour washed away houses and damaged properties.

Speaking to our correspondent, a resident of the area, Solomon Daye, said they were fast asleep when the rain started and later discovered when they woke up that their homes had been submerged in the flood.

“Before the rain started, one of my neighbours went to a night vigil and left her four children at home. Three of the children slept on the bed, while one slept on the floor.  So, when the flood came, the three children who were on the bed were raised up on the bed, while the one on the floor – Theresa died as she could not escape.

“When concern residents arrived to rescue the children, they didn’t even know there were four of them in the house, it was after the rain subsided and they went to arrange the room that they found the body of Theresa,” he said.

Similarly, the Shepherd in-charge, Cherubim and Seraphim Church Movement, one of the buildings that collapsed, Rachel Olaoye, called on Kaduna State Government to come to their aid, saying that was not the first time residents would experience flooding.
