Forum asks state to abandon standard gauge railway project

THE debate on the standard gauge railway tender was reignited yesterday at a public forum with calls to the government to suspend the project. The Ufungamano Multi- Sectoral Forum said the Sh327 billion project was a bad idea and should be shelved. The forum instead rooted for the upgrade of the existing metre gauge railway. Participants said it is the cheaper option. In a statement, speakers Kiriro wa Ngugi and David Ndii said countries like Brazil and India upgraded their existing MGR instead of building new lines.
