Abidjan – The lawyer for Ivory Coast’s firebrand ex-first lady Simone Gbagbo, Rodrigue Dadje, has been charged with threatening national security and jailed, a colleague said Wednesday.
Gbagbo, who was seen as a formidable power-broker before her husband Laurent was forced from office last year, was taken into custody after his ouster and is in prison facing a raft of charges including threatening national security.
Dadje, who represented her, “has been in custody since Monday at the Abidjan prison and corrections centre”, his colleague Toussaint Zahui Dako told AFP.
He said Dadje was arrested on 29 March on arrival at Abidjan airport after several months abroad.
Simone Gbagbo, a powerful figure in the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI) and a virulent critic of ex-colonial ruler France, was seized along with her husband when forces loyal to current President Alassane Ouattara stormed the Abidjan hotel where they were encamped, ending a bloody post-election crisis.
Laurent Gbagbo, whose refusal to cede power sparked months of unrest, is currently in custody at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he faces charges of crimes against humanity.
