Barcelona this evening confirmed the arrival of Thomas Vermaelen from Arsenal, for a fee reported to be around £15m.
Vermaelen arrived in Spain on Saturday morning, after both clubs agreed on a fee, to undergo his medicals and agree personal terms.
The Belgium international was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and reportedly agreed terms with Louis van Gaal’s side, but Arsene Wenger was not keen to do business with a domestic rival again. Wenger has also said many times that another defender will be brought in, if Vermaelen left the Emirates.
The defender has seen his stock fall at the Emirates and is only back-up to Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny. The 28-year-old made 150 appearances for the Gunners and scored 15 times, since he moved from Ajax in 2009.
