An excited Junior Kotestes from Rift Valley received a cheque of Sh 463,884 from MCSK Chairman Michael Maganzo. This was part of the Music Copyright Society of Kenya’s royalties for the broadcasting category. Junior Kotestes is famed for hit songs like Selele, Twolyot and Cheptugeniot.

According to a press statement, MCSK CEO, Maurice Okoth said, “This came as good news for the regional based musicians and in line with MCSK new strategy where the Society has increased its focus on regional based musicians and not to mean that there will be neglect of main stream musicians. In fact, the top ten list of highest earners was dominated by main stream artistes.”

The distribution of royalties this quarter also saw P unit as top earners and most popular artists in four radio stations including Kiss 100, Homeboyz Radio, Ghetto Radio and Hot 96 FM.

In this year distribution the top forty musicians have all received six figure payments according to the prees statement and the highest earner has received close to 30 per cent more than what the highest earner received in the last financial year.

The top-ten earners list also include other artistes like  DNA, Collo, Nameless, Gloria Muliro, Size 8, Kidum and Angela Chibalonza.

The full list of top earners in all categories of distribution will be released at the end of June 2014 after computation of all categories of royalties to be paid out which include international royalties, mechanical rights (ring tones), payments from concerts and events and payments from performances in public places (PPP).
