UPND-President-Hakainde-Hichilema-addressing-the-media-flanked-by-senior-officials-27-03-2014The Kitwe High Court has set aside the bench warrant against United Party for National Development president Hakainde Hichilema.

The Kitwe High Court judge in charge Catherine Makungu had issued a bench warrant last week against Hichilema for failure to appear in court for one of the many court cases the Patriotic Front government have lumped on him with a view to distract him.

High Court judge cast aside the bench warrant after assurance from Hichilema that he will attend the subsequent court cases.

Hichilema through his lawyer Milner Katolo applied that the bench warrant be set aside.

This is a case where acting Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda has sued Hichilema for contempt of court in a case where her continued stay in her office is being challenged in court.

Chibesakunda, who has tenaciously held on to her position, despite controversy over her being beyond the requisite age is muscling her way through the courts of law.

The matter was later adjourned to October 7 after the plaintiff’s lawyers requested for an adjournment shortly after the bench warrant was set aside.

Hichilema briefly addressed his supporters who had turned up to render solidarity.

There was a heavy presence of police outside the court premises keeping an eye on proceedings.
