L.A. Clippers NBA Team Wears Uniforms Inside Out in Protest of Owner Donald Sterling’s Alleged Racist Remarks
The players of the Los Angeles Clippers walk out onto the court for their game against the Golden State Warriors with their uniforms turned inside out on Sunday (April 27) at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif.
The audio features an alleged argument between Sterling and his girlfriend V. Stiviano in which he says derogatory things, including, “You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that…and not to bring them to my games.”
Sterling and the Clippers organization released a statement to the site saying, “We have heard the tape on TMZ Sports. We do not know if it is legitimate or if it has been altered. We do know that the woman on the tape — who we believe released it to TMZ Sports — is the defendant in a lawsuit brought by the Sterling family, alleging that she embezzled more than $1.8 million, who told Mr. Sterling that she would ‘get even.’
The statement continues, “Mr. Sterling is emphatic that what is reflected on that recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feelings. It is the antithesis of who he is, what he believes and how he has lived his life. He feels terrible that such sentiments are being attributed to him and apologizes to anyone who might have been hurt by them.”
This allegedly started when Sterling got angry about an Instagram photo (which has since been deleted) Stiviano posted with NBA legend Magic Johnson. In the tape, Sterling is allegedly heard saying, “Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.”
President Barack Obama was asked to comment on the remarks during a press conference in Malaysia to which he replied, “When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything. You just let them talk. That’s what happened here.”
