Man in prison for issuing dude cheques

A business man Alex Ikechukwu Okafor has been remanded in Umuahia Prisons for a three count charge of issuing dude cheques to one Dr. Paul John Anya, an offence punishable under the law.

The act, according to the prosecuting police officer, Audu Garba, an Assistant Superintendent Police, is punishable under Sections 1[1] [a] of the Dishonoured Cheques [Offences] Act Cap D11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, as applicable in Abia State.

In count one; Okafor was accused of issuing a dishonoured N200, 000 UBA cheque numbers 41893330 to Dr. Paul Anya, an offence punishable under the law which is applicable to Abia state.

In count two, the accused was also alleged to have issued another UBA cheque number 41893331 valued N200, 000 to Dr. Paul Anya which also was also dishonoured on grounds of no funds or insufficient funds, an offence punishable under the law.

Alex Ikechukwu Okafor was in the third count accused of issuing another UBA cheque number 41893332 valued at N500,000 to Dr. Anya which was equally dishonoured on grounds of no funds in his account.

When the accused was arraigned, the presiding Magistrate, Mrs. N.J. Nwaogwugwu directed that the case file transferred to the state Director of Public Prosecution [DPP] for appropriate action  as her court lacked the jurisdiction to handle the matter.

Magistrate Nwaogwugwu however directed the accused be remanded in Prison custody and adjourned the matter to April 11, 2014.
