Manchester City make shock bid for Chelsea defender Luiz
Last season’s Premier League champions Manchester City have identified Chelsea centre-back David Luiz as their latest transfer target and have bid £30million for the 25-year-old according to reports in England.
With Micah Richard injured for up to ten weeks, Manchester City want to add to their defensive options and would like Luiz to build a formidable partnership with captain Vincent Kompany for years to come.
Luiz was left out of the Chelsea side as they beat Reading 4-2 and while the Brazilian claimed on Twitter that he was injured, The Sun has claimed that negotiations were underway between City and Chelsea about a possible transfer.
It would not be the first time Manchester City have attempted to bring a Chelsea star to the Etihad Stadium. In 2009, City launched an audacious bid to bring captain John Terry to the club though he eventually signed a lucrative long-term contract to stay at Stamford Bridge.
As with Terry, Manchester City will find it extremely difficult to convince Chelsea to sell one of their stars. With both clubs financially secure and competing for the Premier League title, it is highly unlikely that Chelsea would want to see Luiz leave to a rival.
Luiz signed for Chelsea from Benfica in January 2011 for £20million and has become a cult hero among Chelsea supporters. The centre-back is believed to be a big part of Roberto Di Matteo’s plans and Manchester City will have to increase their offer if they want their bid to be successful.
