•Stoke City 1 Everton 1

Sir Alex Ferguson believes it is “appetising” that his Manchester United side are already six points clear having played away against the majority of the Premier League’s difficult teams.

Ferguson, for whom Wayne Rooney is a major doubt and Nemanja Vidic is again available for Saturday’s visit of Sunderland, said: “When you look at that it is quite appetising for us. We’ve been to Everton, we’ve beaten Newcastle, we’ve been to the Etihad, we’ve been to Chelsea, Liverpool – it’s quite appetising, that, but we lost to Norwich and that brings you down to earth.”

With three games until the halfway point of the campaign, United have lost 1-0 at Everton and at Norwich City, while beating Chelsea 3-2, Liverpool 2-1, Newcastle United 3-0 and Manchester City 3-2, at those clubs’ grounds.

HERE WE GO

Sunderland get us underway, playing in their all-navy away strip. United, of course, in their usual red shirts, white shorts and black socks.

10:01
IASport

Strong run from full back Phil Jones early on, as the United defender strides into the Sunderland box and manages to get in a cross. Simon Mignolet gets down well to claim the ball, though.

10:01
IASport

6 min: Sunderland last won at Old Trafford in 1968. They are not doing a good job of changing that so far, United have had the best of possession so far. Sunderland have a throw in near the United box though. The move peters out – a through ball goes straight to De Gea.
10:02
IASport

8 min:|amp|nbsp; Young drifts in and his cross-shot is deflected over for a corner. Mignolet punches clear and it’s out to Young, and the one-man corner machine wins another. Which also comes to nothing. “Is Rafael still in the doghouse? If not, where is he? This selection is messing up my Fantasy Football points!,” asks Dan Anderson. He’s not even allowed in the dog house, Dan.

Asked if Mario Ballotelli has a future at Man City, manager Roberto Mancini replied: “Yes. Why not? He needs to work and if he deserves to play because he worked well then he will do, but if not he will be in the stands or on the bench like all of the other players. He needs to train and when he starts to play like his quality he will play again. We won the championship last year because all four of the strikers were scoring goals and we want that again.”
10:07
IASport

11 min: United are putting most of their moves together down the right flank but Sunderland have fought them off so far.
10:09
IASport

15 min: Wayne Rooney tries, well I’m not sure what he tries. It looks like a shot but I think it was an attempt to find Valencia. Anyway, it’s out for a goal kick.

IASport

GOAL – Manchester United 1-0 Sunderland – Robin van Persie
10:11
IASport

GOAL!!!! Manchester United 1-0 Sunderland (Van Persie 15) The excellent Young, twists, turns and crosses. O’Shea, forgetting what side he’s on, pats it out to Van Persie who slams it home.
10:12
IASport

19 min: I suppose United used their inside knowledge of O’Shea’s weaknesses and weaknesses to figure out where they could hurt him (defending). Van Persie nearly gets his second, a lovely cross from Jones forces an excellent save from Mignolet.
10:13
IASport

GOAL – Manchester United 2-0 Sunderland – Tom Cleverley
10:13
IASport

GOAL!!!!! Manchester United 2-0 Sunderland (Cleverley 19) This could be painful. Cleverley gets the ball just inside the area and curls it past Mignolet. Great finish.
10:16
IASport

Two goals in three minutes and United are cruising. It is a belter of a goal as well as Michael Carrick finds Tom Cleverley in the box on the left and he opens his body before slotting a shot into the far corner. Lovely stuff.
10:16
IASport

22 min: Larsson attempts to get the game back on track for Sunderland. Unfortunately, his long ball is directed straight at a wall of United defenders. Wayne Rooney should have made it 3-0 a minute later. Van Persie heads across for Rooney, it’s a tad high and he can’t keep his volley down. Should have scored.
10:17
IASport

Liverpool v Aston Villa

Aston Villa’s Brett Holman sends striker Andreas Weimann clear and he is shepherded wide by Reds keeper Pepe Reina, who ends his good work by getting in an impressive tackle to put the ball out for a corner.
10:19
IASport

25 min: Another chance for Rooney, heading wide from seven yards out. He should have killed this game off in the last few minutes. Although, in truth, it looked pretty dead anyway. Hang on, McClean latches on to an error from Ferdinand and tries to beat De Gea from a tight angle. He doesn’t. “Looks like Van Persie really has the bit between his teeth today,” giggles JR. What are you trying to say?
10:19
IASport

Stoke v Everton

Stoke’s best chance of the match so far falls to Matthew Etherington but the winger drags his effort harmlessly wide of the post.

Kenwyne Jones has not scored in 27 Premier League games, a run stretching back to August 2011, and he shows why with a wild effort from 25 yards that ends up well over Tim Howard’s goal.
10:21
IASport

“Manchester are squeezing the life out of Sunderland at Old Trafford and those two quickfire goals have completely changed the complexion of this match and energised the atmosphere inside Old Trafford. Every United player wants the ball, the runs are inventive and dynamic and the passes are finding their man with unerring regularity.”
10:22
IASport

27 min: Gardner’s shot is deflected by Carrick for a corner. Sunderland have been better since nearly going 8-0 down. De Gea gets a fist to the corner and United clear.
10:24
IASport

GOAL – Liverpool 0-1 Aston Villa – Christian Benteke
10:24
IASport

30 min: Valencia attempts to release Jones just outside the area, but he stumbles after a collision with O’Shea. Should have been a free-kick. Jones has been excellent getting forward, although Sunderland have been so timid it’s hard not to be dangerous. “Revenge is a dish best served with a 7-0 thumping,” parps Rob Bloom.
10:26
IASport

QPR v Fulham

Fulham are continuing to struggle to get into the London derby with QPR, but the hosts, with playmaker Adel Taarabt pulling the strings, have not yet been able to punish their opponent’s lackadaisical start. Only Mackie will know how he missed from six-yards early on, and that could yet come back to hurt Harry Redknapp’s side.
10:26
IASport

33 min: Valencia wins a corner, United’s fifth of the day. Jones gets his head to the ball but it sails wide. The ball, not his head. That would have been sickening. And put Sunderland in with ha;d a chance.
10:27
IASport

Liverpool v Aston VillaLiverpool look to hit back straight away against Aston Villa but Luis Suarez can only hit the side-netting after being put through in the box by Steven Gerrard
10:28
IASport

35 min: Rooney and Van Persie wander into the area. The Dutchman gets into space but Rooney’s pass is wayward – that’s two missed chances and a poor pass from him today. Just to even things up Van Persie loses the ball a few seconds up later.
10:29
IASport

Stoke v Everton

Stoke are putting Everton keeper Tim Howard under plenty of pressure. Matthew Etherington swings a wicked, swerving cross into the box and Howard has to dive forward to clear the danger with a strong punch.

FOOTBALL LEAGUE UPDATE

Shock on the cards at Cardiff? The Championship leaders are trailing 1-0 at home to Peterborough, who are bottom of the standings – Michael Bostwick with the goal.

Ipswich have been in good form of late, but they are 1-0 down at Leeds, Jerome Thomas putting the hosts ahead. Meanwhile, Blackpool lead Blackburn 1-0 and Watford are drawing 1-1 at Burnley, Charlie Austin grabbing his 22nd goal of the season for Burnley from the spot.

In League One, Doncaster, second in the standings, are losing 2-0 at home to Coventry, while Swindon have taken the lead at Oldham, Raffaele De Vita grabbing his fifth of the season. Finally, League Two leaders Gillingham are losing 1-0 to Fleetwood, who are without a win in their previous four games.
10:32
IASport

Manchester United v Sunderland

It has calmed down after the early fireworks at Old Trafford, Manchester United coasting to a fifth straight league win and their 10th in 11 top-flight games. United have fallen behind 10 times in the Premier League this season. It will require a catastrophic collapse for them to go behind against Sunderland.
10:32
IASport

37 min: Another corner for United, Smalling nearly gets his head to the ball from around seven yards out. If Sunderland are looking for positives, Colback has been good today. Sessegnon has a chance but Evra deflects it wide.
10:34
IASport

40 min: Cleverley tries another curling shot but this is all shot and no curl. And definitely no goal. United do have a corner though, which they’re winning at a rate of around five a minute. Evra’s header is off target.
10:34
IASport

Everton should be 2-0 up. It is a great run and pull-back from Leighton Baines and you would put your house and the house of everyone on your street on Leon Osman scoring but he somehow drags his shot wide. That’s a whole street homeless Leon.
10:34
IASport

GOAL – Liverpool 0-2 Aston Villa – Andreas Wiemann
10:37
IASport

43 min: A completely dominant first-half from United. On the positive side for Sunderland, they are only 2-0 down. On the downside, well I’m not sure we’ve got time to deal with the downside. Fletcher has gone down. There’s another one to add to the downside.
10:38
IASport

Norwich v Wigan

Anthony Pilkington and Ali Al-Habsi conspire to ensure Norwich do not double their lead at Carrow Road. Johnson stands the ball up to the back post, with Al-Habsi coming to claim – but he merely palms it back into the six yard box. Pilkington is waiting, but his right-footed effort is poor and he skewers the ball wide of the left-hand post. Not quite an open goal, but he scored a much harder chance earlier. Relief for Al-Habsi, who really should have dealt with it better.
10:38
IASport

QPR v Fulham

I would not want to be in the Fulham dressing room at half-time judging by manager Martin Jol’s furious expression on the touchline as his side continue to labour at Loftus Road. He has yet to voice his anger, but by the look on his face, he could explode at any minute.
10:38
IASport

Manchester United v Sunderland

“It would be great if Sunderland could get a goal before half-time just for the quality of the second half. But it is so disheartening for them, they cannot get out of their own half. The United fans will enjoy half-time. It’s a comfortable 2-0.”
10:39

Manchester United v Sunderland

Sunderland have barely given David De Gea anything to do in the Manchester United goal but James McClean does manage to get a smudge of dirt on the keeper’s gloves with a low shot from range.

IASport

43 min: A completely dominant first-half from United. On the positive side for Sunderland, they are only 2-0 down. On the downside, well I’m not sure we’ve got time to deal with the downside. Fletcher has gone down. There’s another one to add to the downside.
10:40

45 min: Fletcher is back up on his feet again. It lifts Sunderland: McClean shoots from distance but it’s smothered by the welcoming arms of De Gea.

Half-time: Young’s shout for a corner is waved away and that’s the last significant action of a first-half so lopsided it threatened to pull the Sunderland area into the Earth’s core.
10:55
IASport

KICK-OFF – SECOND HALF

And we are back under way in the five Premier League games.
10:57
IASport

46 min: Scholes is on for Carrick, and Wickham is on for Fletcher, who sustained an injury at the end of the first half. He wasn’t going to make a difference in this game but he will be a tough loss if it turns out to be a serious injury. “Vidic has definitely done a good job of intimidating Sunderland,” says Rob Bloom. Not only are they scared to go near the United goal, they’re too scared to go near the ball, the United players or each other.”
10:57
IASport

SUBSTITUTION

A few changes at half-time. Fulham’s Sascha Riether has an injury so Stephen Kelly comes on, Connor Wickham is on for the injured Steven Fletcher for Sunderland at Old Trafford and Joe Cole has replaced Jonjo Shelvey for Liverpool.
10:59
IASport

48 min: Valencia puts in a wicked low cross. Rooney steals in and seems destined to sidefoot it home but Bramble makes an excelletn block. At the other end, De Gea saves Gardner’s low shot.

HITS THE WOODWORK – Manchester United v Sunderland

Manchester United come within a whisker of making it 3-0 against Sunderland as Wayne Rooney is found in the box from a cross from the right but the striker fires his shot against the bar before Ashley Young shoots over from the edge of the box.

Down the other end, Craig Gardner forces David De Gea into a neat save with a goal-bound effort.
11:01
IASport

51 min: A rare false move from Van Persie. He attempts to chip Mignolet as he rushes out of his goal but the shot bounces wide. If United have had one fault today, it’s their inability (so far) to kill this game off completely. Sunderland have been more aggressive since the break.

11:06
IASport

57 min: Scholes gets a big deflection off McClean’s cross and it nearly squirms past De Gea. Sunderland have been the better side for the last five minutes or so, definitely their best period of the match.
11:09
IASport

GOAL!!!! Manchester United 3-0 Sunderland (Rooney 59) Van Persie beats Bramble with a nutmeg and passes to Rooney who taps in.
11:10
IASport

HITS THE WOODWORK – Stoke v Everton

Kenwyne Jones nearly bullies his way to giving Stoke the lead as he drives into the box, beats one defender and then muscles the ball past the diving Tim Howard before deflecting the ball onto the post.
11:10
IASport

61 min: Sunderland had been getting into the game before that. Wickham had bought himself some space (or was sold it at a very reasonable price by Smalling) and shot just over. Vidic is not warming up – Ferguson may well bring him on now that the game is all but won.
11:12
IASport

GOAL – Manchester United 3-0 Sunderland – Wayne Rooney (59 mins)

Sunderland were facing an tough task before but now, surely, it is an impossible one. Robin van Persie exchanges passes with Ashley Young before skipping past a Sunderland defender down the left and crossing low for Wayne Rooney to finish from close range.

Liverpool v Aston Villa

Liverpool pressing hard for a foothold in the game against Aston Villa. They trail 3-0 but could have clawed one back had Martin Skrtel’s header from a corner had more accuracy. Instead, it drifts harmlessly wide.
11:16
IASport

66 min: Craig Gardner – Sunderland’s best shot from distance – sweeps the ball over from 25 yards out. Wickham has been good since he came on and set that chance up after some good hold up play in the box.
11:18
IASport

69 min: “This is the tenth Sunderland game I have seen this year,” says JR in Illinois. “I’m pretty, sure not a single corner or free kick taken by Seb Larsson has cleared the first man in front of him. But at least outside of that everything he’s done has been terrible. Can’t O’Neill find anyone to play besides him? He’s brutal.” In his defence, he is capable to the odd moment of brilliance. It’s just that they have with less and less frequency.
11:19
IASport

GOAL – Norwich 2-1 Wigan – Wes Hoolahan

That is how to celebrate signing a new long-term contract. Wes Hoolahan does superbly in the box to crane his neck back and head past Ali Al-Habsi. He owes a huge debt to Anthony Pilkington, who turned Emmerson Boyce inside out before crossing to the near post.
11:21

Manchester United 3-1 Sunderland (Campbell 71) Sessegnon is allowed to amble after the ball and cross back across goal, it loops over De Gea and Campbell nods in from 0.000006 yards out. JR (69th minute) will be happy to hear Larsson’s corner just before that cleared the United defence.

74 min: Giggs is on for Cleverley. Annoyingle I keep on hearing “Chris Hoy” for the referee Chris Foy and expect the cyclist to give out a booking while pulling a wheelie.

Norwich v Wigan

Al-Habsi makes another good stop, this time from Bradley Johnson, his effort outside of the box needing a strong palm to push it behind the post. Norwich have taken control of the game once more since Hoolahan’s goal.
11:29
IASport

78 min: Sunderland charge ahead because, let’s face it, what else is there to do on a chilly Saturday afternoon when you’re being scalped. Scholes does a two-footed special on Colback.
11:29
IASport

“Sunderland deserve great credit for the desire they have shown at Old Trafford. Lesser sides, sides with less character anyway, might have crumbled after conceding two goals in four minutes but Sunderland have battled on and their fans have been incredibly vocal throughout. It will certainly a source of frustration for Sir Alex Ferguson that United haven’t managed to close this game out with a clean-sheet.”
11:32

QPR v Fulham

11:36
IASport

85 min: A gloriously open game now. This time it’s United who flash a ball across the Sunderland goal: no one can get on to it. Incredibly, Sunderland are still in this game.
11:36

86 min: McFadden is on for Colback. United stream clear after they clear a corner. Jones chips the ball to the far post, it’s too high for Van Persie though and his header is off target.
