The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Kojo Bonsu has said the era of an unreliable street-lighting system in the Kumasi Metropolis will soon be a thing of the pastwith the award of a contract to Prefos Limited, an electrical engineering firm, by government to rehabilitate and maintain all streets-lights in Kumasi.

However, pushed by journalists at the press conference to disclose the entire contract sum and the duration, the Kumasi mayor could not immediately disclose any of these details but insistedto make available those details later.

He observed that the Metropolis has been confronted with a dysfunctional street lighting system for far too long, a situation that he asserts accounts for many criminal activities which take placewithin the city at night.

He said it is in view of the security and safety implications of the situation that government as a matter of urgency stepped up its effort to resolve the issue of malfunctioning street lights andtheir maintenance.

Mr. Bonsu also announced that the contractor, Prefos Limited, has already commenced work with all the faulty streets lights along Dr. Mensah through to Airport Roundabout, Aboabo toAnloga Junction and the Osei Tutu Boulevard have been fixed.

He said the Assembly will not relent in its effort to complement this major intervention of central government in order to ensure the street lighting situation in Kumasi is greatly enhanced.
