Morocco judge fights re-deployment
Rabat – A judge on Morocco’s Supreme Curt has condemned a government decision to demote him to a prosecutor and send him to a distant mountain town.
Mohammed Anbar said on Tuesday the decision by the nation’s previous justice minister was “revenge against him.” Anbar co-founded the new Judges Club in August to promote the independence of the judiciary.
The Ministry of Justice has long had power over Morocco’s judiciary through appointments and salaries.
Anbar is appealing the decision to the new justice minister, who comes from an Islamist party that won November’s election. The transfer decree was signed before that vote.
Anbar says Justice Minister Mustapha Ramid has been more open to measures aimed at increasing the independence of the judiciary than his predecessor.
