Nigeria plays against Cape Verde today ahead of annoucement of Nigeria Final AFCON 2013 list
Nigeria will play Africa Cup of Nations debutant Cape Verde Wednesday night in Portugal, in its second friendly match in as many weeks, in preparation for the 2013 edition of the continental tournament.
Analysts said the match is very crucial for Nigeria, as it will be the last to be played before the expiration of Wednesday’s (midnight GMT) deadline for participating countries to submit their final 23-man squads to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Nigeria drew 1-1 with Catalonia in another friendly last Wednesday, and will be seeking a much-needed morale-boosting victory against Cape Verde, which is ranked more than 60 places below it by world soccer’s governing body, FIFA.
Nigeria cannot afford to underrate Cape Verde, which has shown that it is not a respecter of big names when it comes to playing and winning matches.
On their way to the 2013 Nations Cup qualification, the ‘Blue Sharks’ of Cape Verde demolished
four-time Nations Cup champion Cameroon, among others.
Nigeria is in the same group with defending champion Zambia, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso at the 2013 tournament, while Cape Verde is grouped alongside host South Africa, Morocco and 2010 Nations Cup host Angola.
