Nigeria: Pro-Amaechi delegates to boycott convention
Automatic delegates to tomorrow’s special national convention of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Rivers State have resolved to boycott the convention.
The automatic delegates comprise mainly of supporters of Governor Rotimi Amaechi and they include 10 members of House of Representatives, two Senators, 23 chairmen of local government councils, 23 party chairmen of PDP and members of the State’s executive Council who are constitutionally empowered to participate as delegates to the national convention.
The aggrieved delegates in a joint press conference in Port-Harcourt yesterday, said they will not participate in the convention as a mark of solidarity to Governor Chibuike Amaechi who they said was unconstitutionally suspended from the Party.
The leader of Rivers State caucus in the national Assembly Hon Asita Asita who spoke on behalf of its members said they are worried that the Rivers PDP is gradually degenerating as a result of the role played in the party by people who have only a little understanding of the working of the party.
“As the duly recognized delegates and by the virtue of our position , we have agreed in solidarity with our Governor who has led us in many convention of the party but was unjustifiably suspended by the party have decided to boycott the forthcoming national convention,” he said.
He berated the national leadership of the party for refusing to intervene in the lingering crisis rocking the State Chapter of the party and warned that any body that will be paraded as the state’s delegates to the convention should be regarded as impersonators.
‘’We are not happy that Amaechi was suspended unconstitutionally. We are not happy the way the national body of the party is handling the situation in the state. Anybody that goes there to impersonate us at the convention will affect the legitimacy of the convention. We are protesting against the suspension of Governor Amaechi from the party’’ he stated.
Dr Innocent Bariko who spoke on behalf of the 27 members of the State Assembly as well as Chimbiko Akarolo who spoke on behalf of the 23 local government chairmen in the state said the council chairmen will not attend the convention. Via Daily Trust
