Nigeria: Who Slaughtered ‘Anambra Democracy’?
New York – Africans In America, Inc., a New York-based organization raising awareness on issues affecting African immigrants in United States has released a 46 page study and findings on reasons for state of general malaise in Anambra State, Nigeria. In the course of the study, official of the organization travelled to Nigeria and interviewed key authorities and people directly
involved and in position to possess relevant information.
The findings are revealing, shocking and thought-provoking. Anambra State, like all other states in Igboland of Nigeria is under great siege, under great pressure by several local and foreign powerful predators illegally and criminally pulling every string to squeeze life out of the powerless masses of the state.
The proper title for this study could have been ‘Who Slaughtered Anambra State’? However, the title (Who Slaughtered ‘Anambra Democracy’?) was chosen for very tactical and strategic reasons.
Since democracy could have been another avenue and opportunity for the people of Anambra State to take their destiny in their own hands and chart their course to emancipation and freedom; but the predatory forces would not allow the people to take their destiny in their own hands as prescribed in Nigerian constitution. The predatory forces ensured that democracy which is the avenue via which the people of Anambra State would have expressed and chart their own course to greatness was attacked, sabotaged and slaughtered in a chosen killing field and by chosen methods. And when the activities of the enterprise (the local and foreign powerful predators) by supreme providence were revealed, shocked and outraged masses cried for full disclosure of the truths.
However, the truths were not disclosed, rather it was covered-up.
This study reveal that the atrocities committed by some segments, some large segments, especially some segments of Nigerian political class in Anambra state and the subsequent cover-up were sure ways of keeping the Anambra State in a state of perpetual comatose, from which it is yet to recover, from which it is yet to be liberated.
Therefore, the title (Who ‘Slaughtered Democracy’?) is satirical, as well as loud statement that the predatory forces clearly know what their aims are: to make Anambra State un-conducive for habitation, for investment, and keep it in a state of poverty, under-development and state of slavery.
Who Slaughtered ‘Anambra Democracy’? is a 46 page study and findings on one of the recent and key cause of general malaise in Anambra State, Nigeria.
Preface/Introduction: The Aim/Objectives of this Study/Presentation
The aim of this presentation is to generate quality high-level discussion and arouse higher consciousness of Anambra State government, the people of Anambra State, the stakeholders, the owners of Anambra State and all interested in development and progress of the state to see the greater harm done to the state by cover-up of the horror finds at Okija, Anambra State in August 2004, as well as to seriously make effort to resolve it.
The way the horror finds at Okija was handled is seen by many as a huge cover-up; Anambra people know it, people of Igboland know it, Nigerians know it, Africans know it and the world knows it.
And the cover-up took place because the governments and authorities at that time allowed it. The cover-up continues because successive governments also allow it.
Something is definitely not right, hence the state of general malaise in Anambra State and Nigeria today.
There are people who know the truth and they are speaking with tongues in their cheek. There are rumors as well. But the truth is too vital to be recklessly IMPROPERLY ‘killed and buried’. The truths are too vital for anyone to speak with tongue in cheek.
Many believe the truths were buried because people highly-placed in government of Nigeria and their cronies were involved in the Okija horror finds. Because the case was so-called ‘slaughtered and buried Nigeria way’, the general malaise in the state lingers on.
The truth about the horrors of over 70 dead bodies and uncountable number of human parts estimated in the hundreds and thousands at various levels of decomposition openly displayed on the surface discovered by Nigeria Police at Okija fetish shrines still remain unresolved.
Inability of government at the time and successive governments to seek the truth and do justice to the horror finds was and still is one of the causes of general malaise in Anambra State today.
When governments are so compromised, so rotten and so weak to do the right things; police, armed forces, security and justice agencies and other law enforcement agencies and the public know it, it becomes impossible for the government to govern and be effective.
Doing justice to the horror finds in Okija fetish shrines and the truth behind them will remove the shame, burden and fear about Anambra State. Doing justice to the horror finds is imperative to restore credibility to community, Anambra State government, Nigeria federal government and Nigerian Police.
Cover-up of Okija horrors makes serious mockery of federal and Anambra State governments. It makes serious mockery of powerful and internationally influential political, intellectual, business, security and religious leaders from the state. Highly influential people like Dr Alex Ekwueme, former Vice President of Nigeria; Chief Emeka Anyaoku, highly influential former longtime Secretary-General of Commonwealth Nations; highly influential and respectable Cardinal Francis Arinze, one of the global leaders of catholic church, a former papal candidate; former Anambra State governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife, highly influential people like Ben Nwabueze, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, Dr. Tim Menakaya and many others.
Cover-up of horrors of Okija is one of the reasons the indigenes of Anambra State are running away from their state; that is why indigenes of parts of Igboland are running away from Anambra State; that is why indigenes of other states in Nigeria are running away from Anambra State; that is why citizens of other African nations are running away from Anambra State; that is why international community are running away from Anambra State; that is why serious investors run away from Anambra State.
The people that perfected the cover-up of the horrors in Okija shrines do not wish Anambra State and Igboland well. Leaders interested in attracting development to an area know that no serious investors and developers will put their money in a state of lawlessness and disorderliness. They know that cover-up of heinous crimes will encourage similar and more heinous impunities in the society which will drive away serious investors and development. Covering up heinous crimes is a sure way to kill a society.
But before the Okija shrine horrors and alleged gangs, there were equally similar organized gruesome savage murder gangs involving very prominent members of the society in Igboland of eastern Nigeria. Make no mistake about it; almost all other tribes in Nigeria had similar killer cult gangs and fetish shrines; so this trend is not exclusive to Igbo tribes alone.
One of such atrocities that was well-investigated, well- documented, appropriately charged and diligently prosecuted and justly concluded when the leadership and police do their work was: the Odozi Obodo Secret Society (some fancifully call it Odozi Obodo Society, Odozi Obodo Confraternity, Odozi Obodo Brotherhood) of Abakaliki metropolitan area from 1951 to 1959.
But because the leaders at the time of Odozi Obodo secret society were not the kind of leaders during the Okija horrors, the outcomes were quite different. The leaders during Odozi Obodo horrors were not mired in corruption and not intent on destroying the society.
Dealing with the truth of the horrors that took place in Okija fetish shrines is imperative for Anambra State to move forward. Anambra State, Igboland and Nigeria democracy could benefit from the truth.
Resolving the case of ‘Anambra Democracy’ is a particular challenge for Anambra State government, the people of Anambra State, the stakeholders, the owners of Anambra State and all interested in developments and progress of the state.
Main Segments and Themes of This Study/Presentation
This presentation has 3 case study segments and 4 main themes.
The first segment will deal with the case study of Odozi Obodo crime syndicate (aka, Odozi Obodo secret cult; aka, Odozi Obodo Secret Society) in about 1958.
The second segment will deal with case study of Headless Body Found Floating on River Thames in London on September 17, 2001
And the third segment will deal with case study of Okija Fetish Shrines Horrors
The 4 main themes of this presentation are:
1. First, to compare and contrast how Nigerian police under colonial British administration handled similar, or rather, more complex crimes involving equally very powerful people (the case of Odozi Obodo crime syndicate) in about 1958 and got better result.
2. Secondly, to show how modern police work could solve a very, very complex and clueless case of headless body found floating on River Thames in London on September 17, 2001
3. Thirdly, to show how modern Nigeria police hierarchy handled, or rather, mishandled crimes which many believe was deliberately mishandled because prominent individuals in the society were involved.
4. Fourth, to draw comparism and contrast: the similarities and differences between the cases of Odozi Obodo crime syndicate in about 1958 which Nigeria police handled and got better result and this recent case of Okija Human Slaughter Fetish Cult Shrine Crime Syndicate which was clearly covered up.
This study also shows that Anambra State is in state of political, social, economic, safety and security, law and order comatose for 2 main reasons namely:
1. Because of horrors that took place at Okija shrines, and
2. Because those horrors were believed to be covered-up therefore sending unmistakable subliminal messages that frauds and crimes are the way in Anambra State and Nigeria in general.
And those horrors apparently did not start with 2003 elections in the state. It apparently started way prior to that period, however, political godfathers, candidates for political appointments, government officials and politicians got deeply involved starting in about 1999.
This study also shows that the state of general malaise in Anambra State today is traced to horrors Anambra political class committed in those shrines. Covering up those horrific crimes invites all sorts of criminality in the polity. This study also shows what could happen to a society when leaders and governments are polluted and compromised.
This study also shows that for Anambra State to move forward, Anambra State government, the people of Anambra State, the stakeholders, the owners of Anambra State and all interested in development and progress of the state have to see the greater harm done to the state by cover-up of the horror finds at Okija, Anambra State in August 2004, as well as commit to appropriately resolving it.
“Who Slaughtered ‘Anambra Democracy’?” is a well-researched paper and a MUST READ for everyone interested in learning the bitter truth on how a group of local and foreign powerful predators illegally and criminally set out to corner the treasury of small Nigerian state (Anambra State) and in the process brought total ruin and destruction to the state and its people.
