A former  President Olusegun Obasanjo has canvassed a unified identity card for all Nigerians.

Obasanjo insisted that the present situation where individuals have different identity cards for voting, health insurance, driver’s license, among others, is not the best for the country.

He spoke to journalists in Abeokuta after registering for the National Identity Card.

He registered at the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Office at 1.50pm.

“Maybe those other institutions that are still keeping separate identification of individuals in one form or other will be able to join hands so that with one ID card, you don’t need a driving license, you will not need another voting card for voting, you will not need another card for your contribution pension or for your health insurance,” Obasanjo affirmed

He explained, “But with one card, you will not only be identified, you will be able to do your business throughout Nigeria. I hope that as time goes on, we will even be able to include blood group of individuals so that even if anybody has an accident and he needs blood transfusion, it is from his ID card that you will know what blood group he belongs to, what type of blood he requires”.
