Abdulkadir Muazu, the Director of Sports Medicine, National Sports Commission (NSC), said only athletes certified fit would be allowed to participate in the 2014 National Sports Festival (NSF).

Muazu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that the commission had already sent to the states the medical care guidelines for athletes.

“We have taken a memo to the council of sports `medical care guidelines for athletes that are competing at the NSF’ that stipulates the guidelines which we have published which was approved,” he said.

“These guidelines stipulate responsibilities for states in the areas of assessment to make sure that athletes who are going to compete are screened and that they are healthy before they compete.

“And the screening entails detailed physical examination, some basic investigations particularly with respect to their heart.

“It is only when they do that and they are certified fit that they can compete during the festival.”

He added that the commission had also made it mandatory for each state to come with a certain number of medical personnel for the festival.

Muazu said that the commission decided to go to such length to ensure that the athletes were healthy enough to participate in the festival to avoid casualties.

NAN reports that the 2014 National Sports Festival, which is the 19th edition, is scheduled to hold in Calabar from Nov. 23 to Dec. 7.
