Opposition can no longer be taken for granted – Akume
The Senate Minority Leader, Sen. George Akume, said in Abuja on Friday that the opposition in Nigeria could no longer be taken for granted. Akume, a former Governor of Benue, made the statement in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), ahead of the National Convention of All Progressives
Congress (APC), scheduled to hold on June 13. He said the opposition APC was gaining more popularity and acceptance among Nigerians as its membership had continued to increase. The party chieftain urged Nigerians to keep faith with APC, adding that it was determined to hold a convention that would usher in great things for the country. “Nigerians must continue to have faith that we (APC) are going to do our convention. The voice of the opposition may be low but that may not be exactly true. “Whatever it is, you cannot take the opposition again for granted. Nigerians have received APC with two hands. “If you look at the number of people who have registered and those who have decamped from the other parties to the APC, the records show the acceptability of the highest
order, ‘’ Akume said. The Spokesman of APC Senators, Sen. Babafemi Ojodu (APC-Ekiti), said the party was perfecting arrangements to organise a peaceful national convention. “We are going to have a rancour-free convention. There is going to be an agreement on those to be elected to run the party. “We are going to elect our leaders and our party will provide hope for Nigerians. “This convention will demonstrate our determination to remake Nigeria, ‘’ Ojodu said. A former Kano State Governor, Sen. Kabiru Gaya (APC-Kano), told NAN that he was hopeful that the APC would become the leading party in Nigeria in the nearest future. “I am happy that the APC is growing in spite of the challenges and frustrations or blackmail by other parties against our members in the National Assembly. “APC is succeeding. We are a strong opposition now and I believe that in future we will become the ruling party by God’s grace,’’ Gaya said. Accreditation of delegates of the APC National Convention is expected to commence on June 12. (NAN)
