Policeman dies, several injured in Plateau fracas

A mobile police officer allegedly died on Sunday night and several people injured in Barkin Ladi and Bassa local governments of Plateau State.

An eyewitness said problem started at Miango village in Bassa Council in the late hours of Sunday when two youths at an annual festival, armed with knives, began fighting and some policemen came to maintain law and order and arrested the youths.

The action reportedly infuriated other youths who came out in large numbers, destroying cars and torching a police station and a magistrate’s court.

Two police officers were injured in the fracas.

A police officer attached to the Special Task Force in-charge of restoring law and order was killed in Barkin Ladi Local Government.

Speaking with reporters in Jos, the Police Public Relations Officer Samuel Dabai, who confirmed the incident, said the officer was chatting with some civilians when unknown gunmen opened fire on them, killing the policeman and injuring two civilians.

He said the body of the policeman has been deposited at the Vom Christian Hospital, while those injured are receiving treatments in the same hospital. The Nation
