PP spokesperson Hophmally Makande to contest for parliamentary seat on independent ticket

Hophmally Makande- to contest as an independent candidate BLANTYRE(MaraPost)—Malawi ruling People’s Party (PP) Spokesperson Hophmally Makande has filed his nomination papers to contest for parliamentary seat in Mangochi-MonkeBay constituency on independent ticket.

Makande was defeated by the incumbent legislator Ralph Jooma in the PP preliminary elections.

Makande protested the results but in the PP impromptu crisis meeting last month the top officials ruled in favour of Jooma thereby declaring the economic minister winner.

But in an apparent dissatisfaction with the decision of the top officials Makande filed his nomination papers on Friday to contest as an independent candidate.

It was clear that Makande did not want his move to be known by the public considering the position he holds in the ruling party as his body-guard could be seen manhandling journalists who were trying to take pictures as Makande was presenting his nomination papers.

Efforts by journalists to have an interview with him after presenting papers were also in vain since he rushed to board his car while his body-guard pushing away journalists who wanted to speak to him.

Preliminary elections for virtually all political parties have proved ineffective as the losers have resorted to contesting as independents reason being partiality by the party officials.
