The Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the Chairperson-Elect in New York To Participate in a Series of Meetings and Activities on the Margins of the 67th UN General Assembly

Monday, September 24, 2012 12:20 AMNEW YORK, September 24, 2012 — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Jean Ping, and the Chairperson-Elect, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, are in New York. They will both participate in a series of meetings and activities on the margins of the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. These events are scheduled to officially open on 25 September 2012 under the theme: “Bringing about adjustment or settlement of international disputes or situations by peaceful means.”

High on the agenda of the AU leadership are several meetings dealing with conflicts in Africa. Among them is a Ministerial Consultative Forum on Sudan/South Sudan, scheduled to take place on 27 September 2012. This will be co-chaired by the AUC Chairperson and UN Secretary-General. Other meetings for the AU leadership dealings with the conflicts in Africa include a Mini Summit on Somalia and two High Level Meetings on the Sahel and Eastern DRC, to be hosted by the UN Secretary-General.

During the UN General Assembly, the enhancement of the African Union’s partnerships with different regional groupings will feature prominently in the AU’s activities. In this context, the African Union Peace and Security Council and the Arab League Peace and Security Council will hold their second consultative meeting in the presence of the Chairperson of the AUC and the Secretary General of the League of Arab States.

Another important Ministerial Meeting of the Coordination Mechanism of Africa-South America (ASA) Summit will also be convened to consult on the arrangements for the 3rd ASA Summit which should take place before the end of the year.

Other important meetings involving the AU delegation in New York include: A High level Meeting of the General Assembly on the Rule of Law, a Special event on Mediation, High Level Consultations on Africa’s contribution to the Post-2015 Development Agenda to be organized by the President of the Republic of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and a Meeting on the Nigerian economy which will be hosted by President Jonathan Goodluck.

During their stay in New York, Chairperson Ping and Chairperson-Elect Dlamini-Zuma will hold separate bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon.

Yesterday, 23 September 2012, the Secretary-General met with Chairperson-Elect Dlamini-Zuma and congratulated her on her election as AUC Chairperson.

The Secretary-General and the Chairperson-Elect discussed the need to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the AU and the UN, not only on peace and security issues but also more on the sustainable development agenda.

As priority issues for Africa, the Secretary-General underlined primary education, poverty eradication, response to natural disasters, and renewable energy. The two leaders agreed to work closely together on these areas of common concern.

The Chairperson is accompanied to New York by a high level delegation that includes some Commissioners as well as the Chairperson’s Chief of Staff and the AU Permanent Observer to the United Nations.
