Princess Oby warms up for Prayer Points launch
COME Saturday, April 26, all roads will literally lead to Citadel Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, as ex-highlife singer turned gospel artiste, Princess Oby, is set to launch her 6th gospel album entitled Prayer points.
The album launch, which will feature notable comedians and artistes, promises to be exciting, inspiring and spiritual.
She revealed to The Nation that the ceremony would also double as a fundraiser towards acquiring musical equipment worth N5m.
Having discovered her musical ability at a tender age, she made efforts to improve on her art. At 16, she released her first album. Between 1993 and 1998 when she was a highlife singer, she released five albums.
However, in 1999, she experienced a turning point in her career, thereby switching from highlife to gospel music.
Speaking on why she changed to gospel, she said, “Sometime in life, you just think of the good, the bad and the ugly and you may just decide to do things right to serve God. Although I wasn’t singing anything bad or negative in my highlife songs, I just felt I needed to praise God because He is the author of our faith.
“I knew from time that I am a child of God. I knew I had the calling, but how to go about it was somehow difficult, especially when you don’t have anybody to guild you. If you listen to some of my highlife songs, you will hear some preaching in it. This is because I grew up to know that we should sing about God for all He has been doing for us because He is the reason we are living.”
She, however, added that being a gospel singer is a passion. “I have five gospel albums. But marketing and sponsorship have been a major problem. So, when you struggle to some extent and you are not getting what you expect, you will get weak. But when that thing is in you, you cannot give up easily; so, I keep doing it and believing that one day, I will get there.”
