Real Madrid deal for Tottenham star Modric a ‘wise move’

Former Real Madrid and Croatia defender Robert Jarni believes Luka Modric can help Los Blancos become European champions.

Tottenham midfielder Modric is expected to sign for the Spanish champions this week in a deal worth around £35m (Dh157.9m), providing coach Jose Mourinho can trim his squad.

Mourinho is hoping the sales of Lassana Diarra or Kaka – who reportedly wants to rejoin either Sao Paulo or AC Milan – can be negotiated to fee up space in his squad and on the wage bill.

Madrid are also considering including defender Ricardo Carvalho, who has declared his intention to leave the club, as part of the deal after midfielder Nuri Sahin declined a move to north London.

Modric, 26, wants to test himself again in the Champions League and Jarni, who won 81 caps for Croatia and spent one season at the Bernabeu, claims his countryman can take them to the next level.

“It is difficult to know how he will react when he arrives,” he said. “We must see where he is going to play and what Mourinho thinks of him.

“Whether he will be a starter or not, or if he [Mourinho] will want to rotate him. All that must be taken into account because Madrid have quality players.

“What I will say is that his way of playing and seeing football matches ties in well with Madrid and the Spanish League.

“He’s a very humble guy, with his feet on the ground and, as a player, he has a lot of quality. Luka has the profile of a Madrid player. I think he has an extraordinary quality.

“If confirmed, his move will raise the level of team play. It seems a wise move on the part of Madrid.”
