REVEALED: Real cause of fire that gutted NFF office
The inferno destroyed the office of the Accountant and Secretary-General in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fire, which started at about 9.30a.m., destroyed the left wing of the last floor of the building, which also housed the ICT Unit.
Eight fire fighter trucks from the Federal and FCT Fire Service as well as one from Julius Berger battled for over two hours to put out the fire.
The fire was said to have started from the office of the NFA’s Director of Finance.
It was gathered from the fire fighters that the fire might have been caused by an electric surge.
Susan Ajenge, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission in the FCT, said “we saw smoke and there was an alarm; my men blew whistle that there was an emergency, so everybody came out.
”My assistant was able to call the fire service, we used our fire extinguisher but it was escalating before the fire fighters arrived. Everybody upstairs came down with the help of my men’’, Ajenge said.
Julius Opetunsin, Deputy Controller, Operations, FCT Fire Service, told NAN that he got an emergency call at exactly 10.02 a.m.
He said the fire fighters arrived at the scene of the inferno 13 minutes from the time they were informed.
”We have officers from the Federal Fire Service that also came with their appliances; it was a combined effort of FCT Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service’’, Opetunsin said.
Aminu Maigari, Chairman of the NFA, who led some board members to assess the level of damage, said investigation would be carried out to ascertain the cause of the fire.
Other members of the board, Emeka Inyama, Deji Tinubu, Suleiman Kwande and Ahmed Fresh also accompanied Maigari on the inspection.
Mike Umeh, the Acting Chairman of NFA, who led a different NFA board delegation to check the level of damage, said the inferno was unbelievable.
Umeh urged the Government to investigate the incident as “there might be a plot by some individuals to cover-up corruption that might have taken place in the NFA”.
