MASERU – Ladybrand Rugby Club coach, Edwin Brand, has joined the Lesotho senior national rugby team, Likatola, as head coach.
According to the Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR) secretary general, Litšitso Motšeremeli, Brand has signed a two-year contract, having started training with the team on Tuesday.
Brand, who guided Ladybrand Rugby Club to the semi-finals of the Free State Griffons Rugby Senior League after finishing the 2014on_sport Likatola season lying on third position, is succeeding Ranga Chimombe, who was the first coach to join Likatola after the team was assembled in October last year.
“Edwin Brand is officially Likatola’s new coach. He is going to start his work as the team’s coach tomorrow (Tuesday this week),” said Motšeremeli in an interview with Public Eye on Monday this week.
“He is indeed a good coach, and without doubt he is going to improve the team’s performance. We are particularly expecting him to improve our backline.”
Motšeremeli said the FLR approached Brand, whom he said was already interested in coaching Likatola.
Like Chimombe, who guided Likatola to their first-ever international Test match victory over Swaziland in February this year, Motšeremeli said they are also expecting Brand to win the upcoming Test match against Botswana on September 20 at home.
This comes after Likatola lost 44-3 to Botswana in a Test match played in Botswana in June this year.
“Chimombe was just an interim coach but we still cherish the fact that he won his first match in charge when Likatola beat Swaziland 5-3 at home. So we are also expecting Brand to win his first match in charge, and it’s going to be against Botswana on September 20.”
Motšeremeli further said Likatola were now going to start training in Ladybrand, at the suggestion of Brand.
“The ground (in Ladybrand) has everything needed for rugby training and matches. And we will train there for one week, with a week’s training in Maseru for a week substitutable.”
